Certosa di Padula is an impressive former monastery, part of Unesco's World Heritage. It has wonderful architecture, interesting modern art and an exhibition about a part of its history....the staff is very helpful. A hidden trasure.

This monastic complex is huge, and quite impressive. As others have noted, is it largely bare of its furnishings and treasures, and even the condition of the buildings is pretty bad in some areas. But enough of it is intact to give you a feel for what the monastic life would have been like, and the immense holdings and wealth that would have been needed to build and support a place of this scale. The chapel had some great frescoes and woodwork that were still intact (I'm still not clear why they would not allow photos in this area, since it clearly isn't a consecrated church anymore), but most of the rest of the complex was pretty barren. Signage is pretty good, though the complex is large enough and enough of it not open to the public that it was easy to lose your way if you weren't paying close attention. The museum that's in the middle of the complex had archeological items from the surrounding area (rather than anything from the Certosa), but it was interesting and worth a brief visit. If you're in the area, this is definitely worth a visit.

On our way to Matera from Maratea, someone suggested that we should drop into Padula because the Certosa di San Lorenzo is worth visiting and sure enough it was. Even if one is not into architecture much, this certosa is still worth a visit. if you can join a guided tour of the building, it is so much better as there is so much to learn.

Padula is nearby the motorway. This is an impressive place and one of the biggest of its kind. It has been badly treated over time.Emptied of its treasures.But still you can see the architecture which is huge and spectacular, and very decorated. Baroque style.The use of the monastery has changed over time, for many different uses, so it has suffered. Its remaining magnificence is a tribute to the builders.It may surprise, I liked the giant kitchen, with its chimney.There is a big decorative tower at the other end, with spiral marble stairs, is to be seen!And the huge cloister, with view on the city of Padula, above.Ticket is acceptable.Found the ban on taking pictures a bit ridiculous after paying the entrance. There is a lot of surveillance, but I managed to take a few beautiful ones (at the end of the afternoon, some pictures were tolerated).The remaining decorations are beautiful (inlay).If you are passing nearby, it is definitely worthwhile seeing it.Not sure about making a trip on purpose, unless you are into architecture and ancient art.The place is also worthwhile for children who can run around and will like its size.

La certosa si estende su oltre 50.000 mq ed è un capolavoro di architettura da restare a bocca aperta nel visitare tanta magnificenza, personale attento e disponibile ad ogni spiegazione ci hanno fatto visitare anche una cella (una vera e propria suite con annesso giardinetto). C'è anche un secondo piano che al momento era chiuso per allestimento di una mostra. Il biglietto costa 4 euro. Se vi trovate in zona vale la pena visitarla.

Struttura stupenda situata in un luogo tranquillo e facile da raggiungere.Ottima conservazione dei locali e dei giardini.Un grazie ai custodi disponibili ad ogni spiegazione.

Approfittando delle vacanze di Carnevale, con le scuole chiuse, abbiamo portato i bambini (6 amichetti) sulle nevi del monte Sirino, ed abbiamo fatto una puntatina a Padula per visitare la famosa Certosa di S.Lorenzo. Vi erano anche altri convenuti per lo stesso motivo; purtroppo il martedì la Certosa è chiusa al pubblico, nonostante il personale fosse presente all'interno. Scarsa lungimiranza degli amministratori locali che non hanno considerato come il lungo week-end festivo avrebbe attratto turisti anche di martedì. Peccato.

Ci è stata consigliata dal proprietario del B&B dove alloggiavamo e devo dire, con profondo rammarico, che non la conoscevo ( qui il buon Sgarbi mi avrebbe dato a ragione della "capra"), ma sono rimasta incantata da tanto splendore!Non sto a dilungarmi su cosa è la Certosa di San Lorenzo e che cosa c'è, perché quello nelle altre recensioni è stato spiegato tante volte e molto bene.Vorrei soltanto dirvi dell'emozione profonda che ho provato quando l'ho visitata, sono rimasta in silenzio per quasi tutta la durata della visita ascoltando tutto quanto aveva da dire la guida di un gruppo al quale ci siamo aggregati strada facendo.E' veramente un peccato che realtà così interessanti non siano pubblicizzate e/o proposte al grande pubblico più sapientemente, sarebbe un vantaggio anche per la zona e per la gente che ci abita.Unico piccolo neo è l'ingresso che sembrava non ben tenuto e sicuramente bisognoso di qualche intervento mirato.E' tutto molto bello, anche la cucina dei frati è uno spettacolo potrebbe essere ancora attuale con qualche piccolo accorgimento...Consiglierei la visita della Certosa a tutti, potrebbe essere proposta sia per gite scolastiche che per gite organizzate perché non dimentichiamoci anche delle bontà enogastronomiche che quel territorio offre!
