If you've ever wanted to see the archeology experience in-process, then the Parco Archeologico di Scolacium is for you. Located in the middle of an active olive grove, the ruins are in a constant state of dicovery. This site is relatively unknown, so enjoy a crowd-free stroll and make sure to walk through the museum on site.

Just a short drive from Catanzaro Lido, the visit consists of five stops. Upon entering one encounters the remains of an enormous Norman church, which can only be viewed from the outside, but views into the interior from the lateral and central door are rewarding. One then continues with a visit to the local museum arranged chronologically so begin on the 1st (American second) floor before visiting the galleries on the ground floor. The marble portrait heads and marble statues are a real treat. There are extensive labels, alas all in Italian. One then returns to the site to visit the remains of the Roman Forum, again from the perimeter, before viewing the remains of the theater, amphitheater, and Byzantine necropolis. Whereas the route to follow for visiting these areas was not clearly marked, each of the archaeological areas is clearly labeled in both English and Italian, making the visit more enjoyable.

This beautiful Archaelogical Park, just a few Kilometers South of Catanzaro Marina, it is particularly important because it's one of Calabria's Archaelogical Park where the Roman legacy is more testified than the Greek one, more commonly present in Calabria's Archaelogical Parks, the Greek Skylletion being totally erased be the Roman Colony, Minerva Scolacium. The Park being steeped in the ever present Mediterranean vegetation, constitutes a nice opportunity of spending a few pleasant hours in a naturalistic environment. You can admire the Roman Theatre and Amphitheater, Aqueducts, etc....Particularly remarkable, the huge Norman Cathedral, The Madonna della Roccella, which complements the unicity of one of Calabria's most important Archaelogical Parks, unfortunately very litlle known, even by the very Italian people, not to miss!

While I always hated history, being able to walk through these ruins, and learn about the people who lived there thousands of years ago, encouraged me to do further reading and research.

Go in the morning when the museum is open. Well worth an hour of anyone's time. Also visit Calabria's first electric-pwered olive press factory. Pleasant walk by the ruins, theatre, amphitheatre - about a kilometer long so easily done except for one short steep hill. Stunning views of the coast.

If these ruins were located around Rome, you would not be able to get close to them. However, being located in a non-tourist area allows one to tour without crowds. The museum located on the grounds is very informative. The world reknown artist, Buren, has an exhibit that was incooperated into the ruins. Very interesting.
