A small but impressive Oratorio of the XIV century. Covered by spectacular frescos the Oratorio has a very special atmosphere. A nice view on Urbino's Duke Palace from the top of the stairs complete the magic of the place.

The Oratory of the Church of San Giovanni Battista is a small building, famous for its cycle of frescoes depicting the Crucifixion and the life of St. John the Baptist. The frescoes were done by Lorenzo Salimbeni da Sanseverino (and likely his brother Jacobo as well) in 1416 and are an amazing example of Renaissance art.My friend and I had the room to ourselves for most of our visit and it was a treat to be able to take it all in in quiet. Along with the frescoes in the Medici chapel in Florence, and the Basilica in Assisi, these are among the best I've ever seen. This little church was a big surprise and the best site to see in Urbino.

Incredible frescos covering all the walls. A small chapel with the most beautiful frescos covering most of the walls. Aveery tranquil place.

It looks like a building site inside right now however you come really close to the paintings and can admire the art and story. Helpful staff and a two page paper in English for support.

We visited the Oratory of S. Giovanni to see the Salimbeni frescoes. They were being restored, but they let us get up on the scaffolding! For free (this would never happen in Tuscany)! So much fun to watch!

This small chapel is a wonderful site to visit but be aware that it is currently under renovation. The chapel is full of scaffolding and platforms and one entire wall is impossible to view in its entirety. The upside is that you can mount the scaffolding and watch the restorers at work and you can still see all of the beautiful fresco on the end wall. Still worth a visit in my opinion and would be a definite top score when restoration work is complete.

If you love art, be sure to visit this small church at the end of a quiet street. The interior is covered with paintings of Biblical scenes using the faces and clothing of 15th century townspeople. Powerful, yet at the same time utterly charming.

The picturesque walk down to the oratory is well worth the effort even just for that. The oratory is beautifully decorated with original frescoes. It is a small place but quite a jewel.
