So simple in a magnificent setting.....be sure to climb the stairs to the right side to the upper terrace for enchanting views of the Ligurian sea. I hope the harpist is there playing to make it all the better as it was for us.

One of the great things about travelling slowly in Italy is the chance to sit quietly and offer a prayer of thanks in some of the most beautiful churches ever built. The location of this church set perched up over the sea is spectacular. It is a very small church with open windows for the breeze to come in and cool you. Just outside there was a little old lady selling ornaments she had made from crab shells - do yourself a favour and part with 2 euros for one - you'll make a friend and the little souvenir will remind you of a beautiful place.

This is the best place for a romantic walk, lots of photos and a calm relaxing wait for the sunset. There is a tiny very old church that seems to be one thousand years old and Catollics can pray there. Do take your cameras!

The location of San Pietro Church is fantastic. It sits on the tip top of Portovenere's promontory. Lots of steps lead you up to the church. We walked up stopping along the way to enjoy the fantastic views of the sea and the little town. The church dates back to the 6th century. In the 13th century it was extended with a Gothic style addition and a belltower. Being in the church was a joy.

My husband and I were blown away by the location of this church, the views cannot be beat. You must see the grotto (inspiration of Lord Byron)! It is heavenly! Inside the oldest building there is a protected excavated area that dates back to the 5th century. The entire site is so very impressive-and it is easily accessible, stairs-but not hundreds of stairs!

The most beautiful aspect of visiting this church is the view. The photos posted here don't even do it justice. You can sit on the stone wall, basking in the warm sun and enjoying the most beautiful view. The doors that open to the church as also worth examining. They are very intricate, a piece of art in itself.

This historic church perched high on the cliff overlooking the sea is full of history . It pays to read about it before you go there. On the day we visited it was about to host a wedding , so decorations were being put in place for the event . A truly picturesque place to be married in . It is simple is design and quite small , well worth the climb up the hill to visit it.

From the unique cast copper doors to the medieval arches, this small, chapel-like church is just exquisite. Lots of history and changes over many centuries.

Porto Venere is another very pretty and very historic Italian port and in itself worth a walkabout. Wandering up from the port area itself you reach this ancient church which is still used today. It offers wonderful views from its windows while inside its simplicity is moving. It offers no great decorative effects, just simple stone and carving. It is peaceful even when we tourists occupy it. Some restoration and conservation is continuing.

It takes an effort to climb the stairs but there are so many views to see from the various levels and 'look-outs' it is worth a slow climb. The church itself is very pretty. We actually saw a wedding taking place in it. I felt sorry for the bride and father who had to climb all those steps to the church, but it would be a great place for a ceremony.
