Having attended Oktoberfest and the Bad Durkheim Festival, I was much more enamored with Bad Durkheim. This is mostly due to the fact that I am not a beer drinker, but love wine. Half of the fun is searching the wine booths for your favorite glass design (you get to keep the large glass). I found the atmosphere less obnoxious than Oktoberfest as well. There are carnival rides and vendor booths full of food and artwork/crafts, etc. I recommend taking a group of friends/family and enjoying a beautiful September day experience this German Fest (they have a lot) with a rich history that goes back hundreds of years!

This is a great wine and food festival with lovely and happy atmosphere. The musicians going up and down the aisles playing traditional German music, long tables, laughing and singing crowds. They serve wine in glasses of 0.5 and 0.25 liter. It was great fun.

Had a great time at the wine feast!! Great food and wine!! Fun for the family as well lots of rides and vendors !! Will go back next year!!

Im not knocking the wine fest, but it wasnt what I expected. Its more for families with small kids and people who like fried carni food, carni rides operated by sketchy operators, and very few wine venders. What I expected was more wine venders and tastings and less of the carni environment

While in Germany to visit my daughter, son-in-law and grandson, I read that the Bad Durkheim Wine & Wurst Fest was taking place during my visit. The last time I went to this Fest was in 1987 when I was living in Germany. The round-trip train ride to get from Wiesbaden to Bad Durkheim is a whole story and review in itself, so I'll save that for a later submission. But the Fest was just as awesome in 2014 as it was in 1987. There are three LARGE wine and food tents along with at least a dozen small wine kiosks. The Riesling was excellent, not to mention that it is served in 1/2 liter glasses -- yep, about 16 ounces of wine. That is what I call an appropriate glass of wine. There were several food venders that gave Fest goers a large variety to choose from. This Fest is only held once a year, usually the second and third weekends in September and the weekdays in between. Just remember it is just before Oktoberfest! This is definitely a fun way to spend a day in central Germany's wine region and a good way to have some good wine and Germany fare.

The first two weekends and weekdays inbetween you can have the time of your life with great wines, food and a happy go lucky canival atmosphere. The 36 original vinters of Bad Dürkheim have small open tents next to each other where people "taste" the wines in half liter "Dubbe" glasses. You pay a deposit the first time and then take it to any of the tents to be filled. Bring your own food, buy food at any of the many booths or share with a friend. There are big tents with music and beer as well.Do not drive, take public transportation (where you can drink already) which runs every 30 minutes at least, or have a DD. Police is extremely strict when it comes to checking cars and bikes.

Awesome time. Lots to do. The North American mind is not use to that type of festival, so be prepared to have a good time.

We absolutely loved this wine festival. Great wine and food (obviously) but the atmosphere is the best part. The long tables, the laughing crowds, the musicians going up and down the aisles playing traditional music - it was wonderful. My husband and I sampled quite a few of the wines (I had schorle each time so I could make it through - it's about 4 fingers of wine topped with sparkling water) and took home a number of bottles for later enjoyment. If I could go there every year, I would. If you are in the area in September, definitely try it out!

This "wine and sausage festival" was recommended to me by my cousin who was based in Germany several years ago as a far better place to visit than the Munich beer festival. He was right. It's a generally undiscovered gem. Hidden away in the German countryside Bad Durkheim itself isn't the most beautiful of towns but this festival held every September is a must. We visited September 2011; there were 37 different wine tents each with 2 family run vineyards promoting their wines. It was €5 for a 1/2 litre glass of wine (!!) and we wondered why everyone seemed so sober until we discovered the sensible locals were having half wine/half water. There were food stalls selling everything from the standard sausage in every flavour plus meter long sausages (yep they really were that long) to Hungarian Goulash; slow cooked pork with sauerkraut; pizza; cakes etc It was a food and wine heaven that I would definitely revisit and full of locals so you know it's good; everyone was really friendly.

Great Festival! I've went the last two years....great time. If you have never been, think of an American style fair mixed with lots of wine/beer tents and bands. If you plan on spending time in one of the tents, make reservations for a table and a nearby hotel, well worth it.
