We went in december, so the christmas market was on. A lot of places to eat local and great food, roasted pork sandwichs, raclette, etc... its a big and beautiful square with many restaurants and shops around it. There is a underground parking place or you can park around in the street.

Lovely big square surrounded by nice shops and cafes. Plenty of outdoor seating where you can sit and take in the atmosphere and enjoy the fountains.

We had a trip to the Black Forest and visited two towns on the same day in this lovely region of Germany. The first one was Freudenstadt and I am always impressed by the cleanliness of these towns. You never see litter anywhere and all the grass areas are kept trimmed and tidy and there is always an abundance of flowers everywhere so when we arrived in the town in lovely warm sunshine it looked gorgeous. You can wander the shops and alleyways and there are lots of lovely coffee shops to sit and have coffee and cake and watch the world go by. There is a also a lovely square with flowers and a fountain and a nice church. We were unable to go into the church as there was something going on but you could read the history of the church outside. The one standing there at the moment is not the original as it was bombed in the Second World War but it is imposing just the same. We spent a couple of hours there and went on the second town called Gengenbach which is about 1 1/2 hours further on by train. This is an even prettier town with more shops and cafes but it has a wall at either end with an impressive arch so obviously was once a walled town. We spent a couple of hours there as well but this town was bigger with more little streets and alleyways and interesting buildings and if you are visiting the Black Forest then these towns are not to be missed. Look for the public toilet in this town, it has big black medieval looking door which leads down some steps to a very clean and well looked after loo with baby changing facilities as well. You will need 50 cents though and most toilets in Germany will need to be paid for so keep some 50, 20, and 10 cent coins

Freudenstadt is a small city located at the heart of the Schwarzwald in Germany. Be it a teashop, an Irish pup, a shoe shop, or just a coffe that you are looking for, the Markplatz in Freudenstadt is the place to be!

We came across this Black Forest town in the middle of summer and in the middle of a weekend festival. Live music, plenty of beer and good food, and plenty of people having a ball. Some real characters here, all enjoying their lives, Plenty of yah yah yah and no sign of any nein.

This is a huge square bisected by busy roads. On one side is the area used for the local market and on the other fountains which children had great fun playing in on hot days. There are lots of cafes and areas of grass to sit out and surrounded by shops. The museum is also located here which is interesting and has free entry.

This is the main focus of the town with a history, some lovely restaurants and a fountain maize that kept the children entranced. The shopping although expensive for us was interesting and the variety of shops kept you busy for a while.

The Marktplatz is a great place to take a breather from touring the Black Forest, there are fountains, cafes, shops, Cuckoo Clocks and Black Forest Cherry Torte galore. The colonnades go around all four sides and even the nave of the church is built in an L-shape to fit into the architecture. Very cleverly, the altar and baptismal font can be seen from both sides. Its a spare, Protestant church, so its unusual shape becomes even more striking.

Apparently Europe's biggest marketplace. Freudenstadts only claim to fame. Water attractions on one side. End of story.
