Bad Urach is a fantastic place to hike and the Hohenurach ruins offer an interesting backdrop for stunning views of the Swabian alps. The castle complex is free to enter and you are allowed to go almost everywhere inside of and on top of the ruins, which are actually a lot bigger than I was expecting. My wife and I ran into only a few other visitors on the cold, wintry January day and everybody we passed was very friendly and greeted us with a warm "Gruss Gott". The is a small plaque in German and English which details a little bit about the history of the castle accompanied with a map of the entire grounds. From the castle ruins it's an easy hike of one mile or so to the gorgeous Urach Waterfall.A couple notes of caution, there are not a lot of signs on the hike up the hill to the castle, but once you are on the main trail leading up, all you do is stay on it. Since the the elevation of the trail is rather gradual, at times I wasn't sure if we missed a turn in the snow, but the main trail does get you to the top.Secondly, make sure you wear boots/shoes with good traction. The hill trail and the ice covered steps by the waterfall were treacherously slippery. The town of Bad Urach is also well worth a visit. Despite its relatively small size, the town has one of the most beautiful timber house market squares that I've seen. The Rathaus and Schloss are particularly worth seeing. Bad Urach makes a great day trip from Stuttgart; it took us less than 35 minutes by car. The hiking area has ample free parking.

If you are staying in the Stuttgart area, Bad Urach and the ruins known as Burg Hohenurach are worth a day-trip. Take a leisurely 3-6 km hike up to the castle ruins and then hang out and photographs the surrounding Swäbisch Alb. Then you can hike back down to Bad Urach and enjoy and ice cream along with the local architecture. There are bathrooms and food available for purchase at the top of the nearby waterfall about 1 km away, which is also worth seeing.

After striking out during our first attempt, we tried again about a month later. It turns out the ruine is losing some if it's structure so the forest/park service is doing some safety maintenance; a fencing was placed to keep it from falling on your head. What a great visit we had. The base in intact so you can see the design of the structure and the view is great! We made a third trip a few weeks later and enjoyed our lunch with a view of Bad Urach. So glad that winter came late so we could enjoy the weather before heading home after Christmas. The recommended 2-3 is for the hike up/down and the visit.

The ruins are easy to see, atop the alb, from the town of Bad Urach but they are closed to the public for the time-being because they have been deemed unsafe to approach. This was a disappointment but there are other good places to wander.
