The cruise from Kelheim to Weltenburg is 40 minutes upstream to explore the 400-foot chalk cliffs and dramatic scenery of the Danube Narrows. The river cuts a pass through the mountains, which is one of the most beautiful section of Danube River. The cruise ends at Weltenburg Abbey, founded at the beginning of the 7th century, one of Germany’s oldest monasteries.

We took a boat from Weltenburg to Kelheim. It was possible to take our bicycles on board (extra fee) which was very convenient. The cruise was pretty short and a bit pricey. But because the views were really wonderful I would not hesitate to make the tour again or recommend it to anyone.

The boat from Kelheim to Weltenburg takes ca 40 minutes upstream, and less downstream. You can sit inside or outside, and it is possible to buy beer, wine, coffee, cakes etc on board. Very nice views from the boat, beautiful scenery a long the river. Information about the river and surroundings is in both german and english. I can understand that this is number one tourist-attraction in Kelheim.

Some people love the offered food and drinks at the Weltenburg Monastry before they are looking for their tent at the other bank of the river - I hope you dont! It´s not to be "schön blau in der Donau" but "schöne blaue Donau"!

We drove down from Auerbach to Kelheim, took us a while to find the boat landing. It probably would have helped if we google-mapped the town before we went (duh). Anyway, it's right across the street from the big Post Office building. If you get lost, look for the large brown signs with the list of tourist attractions and the arrows, and look specifically for " Donau [which is German for Danube], P4 and P5 [which refers to the parking lots near the boat ramp]". Bring some Euro coins with you for the parking automat ticket dispenser. By the river you will see a trailer/kiosk that sells tickets, 8.70 E roundtrip. Over on the forum, someone has posted the boat schedule, which gets less frequent after Oct 10, so check it before you go. The boat ride is 40 minutes upriver through the Gorge to the Abbey, and 20 minutes back down. Drinks on the boat are expensive (5 E for 2 diet cokes) and the meals at the Abbey restaurant likewise (15 E for an entree and a beer). The church is beautiful and ornate, and it was fun to talk to one of the monks about their life there. But for me, the boat ride was the thing, and next time I go (with the kids this Sunday probably), I'll just pack a lunch to picnic on the riverbank. There's plenty of room on the boat for a stroller or a wheelchair, and you can take a bike on as well. With wheelchairs, be advised the ramp at the abbey dock is steep. Have fun.

ドナウ川が最もせばまる場所で、ヴェルテンブルク修道院に行く船で通ることができます。船の上から見る大きな岩群はまさに絶景です。船で通る時、特に接近しすぎて危ないと感じるようなことはなかったですが、目の前にそそりたつ岩々はまさに一見の価値があります。確かこの船乗り場から修道院まではずっと小道があったので、かなり距離はありハイキングの域に達しますが、歩いて近くに行くこともできるように思えます。

Mit dem Dampfer von Kehlheim oder Weltenburg durch den Donaudurchbruch zu fahren ist schon ein einmaliges Erlebnis. Die einzelnen Stationen werden vom Kapitän sehr gut erklärt. Dieses Naturschauspiel von 180 Millionen Jahren sind sinnbildlich für unsere immer wieder wechselnde Natur.
