A dark mountain lake, surrounded by steep wooded slopes, this could be a very atmospheric spot but at the height of the season, with the sun out, you'll be sharing it with several hundred others. There are many facilities - restaurants, a gift and postcard kiosk, loos, pedaloes to rent - which make it a convenient daytrip for families.

Very nice place for whole family. You can rent a pedalo for 4 persons and float on it approx. on 75% of the lake. You can't swim there but I think it's not a problem. You can also go around the lake by foot, but it's better without stroller (there are roots, stones). The footpath is under the trees so it's great place where to go in hot weather. You can see beautiful water flowers on the water surface. There is big paid parking place, small shops with souvenirs, restaurant and toilets.

No trip to the Bavarian Forest would be complete without a visit to, and walk around, the Arbersee (the "groß" variety, not be confused with its little brother, as nice as the latter is). Set against a magnificent backdrop of towering cliffs belying their relatively low altitude (around 1000 metres), this gem of a lake feels like it should be high in the Alps. There is a well-marked perimeter trail with regular information boards pointing out the amazing natural features of the area. It's in German and Czech (the border is only a few miles away) but you'll get the gist of it. Even without your bi-lingual descriptions you should walk around the lake (45 minutes gentle stroll) and take in the scenery. They were having a heatwave during our visit with temperatures over 30 degrees C even at 1000m altitude so we really appreciated the shade afforded by the trees, and the cold beer at the huge pub-restaurant by the car park.

We wanted to go to Großer Arbersee by hiking trail from Bayerisch Eisenstein. Fortunately, we had a hiking map - without it we couldn't find the right road. The trail-signs system was terrible. Where we could, we asked locals which trail we should take. Nevertheless, we lost the way near the Arberhütte (and we didn't know it for an hour of walking). We met three groups of tourists on the road (German family, Czech couple, and a Slovak family) - all of them were also lost. So after an hour of climbing we turned back and returned to Arberhütte where we finally found the right trail. When we arrived to the lake, we realised that there was an asphalt road - there were hundreds of people who arrived by cars or motorcycles (it was on Suday), and the restaurant by the lake was absolutely full.On the other hand, nature and the Arbersee were beautiful, I warmly recommend to visit it. However, if you go on foot, pay a very close attention to trail signs (do not rely on undesribed arrow-signs, buy a map and ask locals). I wish you good luck.

Situated on a bend on the road toward the sky area on Arber, a Bavarian mountain not far from Bodenmais. Authentic Bavaria and highly popular. Very busy in the summer at the week-ends. Hot and cold menu and local beer. You can rent peddle boats and go around the cold water lake.

the cost of the cable seemed a bit much but given we spent all day 'on the mountain' it worked out okay. We had a great day climbing up and over the rocky 'peaks' and enjoying the amazing views. Lunch was super fast given how busy they were and great value and my 'German soup' was fantastic! A great day out!

After a long walk from Grosse Arbor, we found the cafe at the Arborsee closed and a few tourists milling about miserably. Few signs to show you where to walk next
