Many decades ago, the Cleves region was “shoe city” number one. The " tradition of the stitching awls " was widespread amongst craftsmen, therefor this "Schüsterken" on the bridge, created by Joseph Brüx, recalls to the whistling shoemaking companions on their way to work. The small "Schüsterken" is also called Bältermann, as well as "Spuckmännchen" (spit-lad) due to the fact it is a fountain.
