sculptor Mataré won the tender for this contest. This sculpture "the dead Warrior" is no hero, it is a "fallen soldier", carved from stone, laying as if on a stretcher, cold and motionless, rigid on the sides - the finger slightly bent – as if death had frozen his once warm body, no armory in sight as he is a victim of war. The monument symbolizing suffering, sadness and death was an eyesore to the Nazis and had has to be removed as 'Entartete Kunst' (degenerate art) thus, one night, it was smashed and buried somewhere on wasteland, In the seventies by chance its fragments were discovered and excavated. The monument was re-composed and placed near the collegiate church. In his chest is a circular floor where artist Mataré did hide something: a list of in WW I fallen citizens.
