Within the National Park System, there are Park buses that go and come from here on an hourly basis. The views from the bluffs over the river/lakes are phenomenal. The history of the area is well explained through photos in english and german. Excellent visitor center with very good food. Definitly worth a visit.

You wouldn't think that a former training camp for putative leaders on the German National Socialist Party would be a natural place to eulogise about. But this site, currently being developed with help of millions of Euro's, really makes you think. Much of it won;t be finished for a year or two - which is the ONLY reason this didn't get 5 stars - but what there is makes you stop and realise the breadth of planning that was initiated to indoctrinate an entire generation. And is a salutary lesson for all to see how the reasonable person can be turned a automated functionary - so it has a topical lesson for us as well. I have visited in near freezing temperatures in February and spent 3 hours being awed at what was constructed. I fully plan to return in more temperate weather when it's completed. The entrance fee is a token amount for parking but I would have felt 8-10 Euro's would have been well spent. And the staff - especially Uwe - could not have been more pleasant, giving us a detailed explanation, in English, off the cuff.

After so many sites visiting all over the world, is seems that this place does not really encourage none-Gemrnan visitors to come... no signs in English, what ? when ? where to go ? what are the options ? where to park ? NADA ! it's a pity because the potential of the site is huge.BTW the staff in the site are really very nice.

In 1944 this training centre for the Nazi Party was still purchasing books for its extensive scientific library, in 1945 it was occupied by the British, then ceded to the Belgian Army as a training camp. From 1948-2006 no-one was allowed in, now it’s just a meagre car park fee to see an amazingly well preserved piece of Nazi architecture. Wander the site and you’ll see muscled “Übermensch”, eagles and murals, open air theatres, running tracks and swimming pools, but watch where you tread, the grounds are literally crawling with minute frogs! The Belgians only vandalised a few overtly Nazi statues, shooting the muscled footballers’ statues balls off, other than that, it’s all left exactly as the architect intended. Walk along the sheltered walkways, look inside at the officers’ drinking mess, imagine the skulls, eagles and swastikas and suddenly it all comes to life. I think you are expected to find the architecture oppressive and fascistic, but both my son and I really liked the calm, ordered and rooted feel of the architecture - a complex fusion of the vernacular and classical that somehow just worked. lift your eyes away from the site and you’ll find an almost untouched valley of breathtaking beauty -what a canvas for the architect, Clemens Klotz! The whole site is being renovated for official unveiling in 2014, along with a multi-lingual visitor centre, I am anticipating it will have the usual ponderous apologies for the cultural aberration of NS (‘Nazi”) ideology. Still, visit now and think for yourself, you might actually like it! In terms of visiting, it is still a bit of a building site, but if you use your imagination, it all lives.

The Vogelsang burg is a nice way to see how soldiers were trained. A nice hike (at some point streneous) goed around the Ruhrsee and crosses the Urftal sperre. Some parts of the trail are steep. Be sure to visit the small town of Wolseifen which has been used as training area.

Parking 3 euros.
