A very pleasant stroll over the dam and around the lake if you want to venture further. There is a lovely restaurant just 2 minutes walk from the dam with a perfect view of the dam while enjoying a snack or meal. Its a little bit out of the way so you need a car I should think. You will be charged for parking!

Visited this place during recent trip to Xmas market in Dortmund.I had seen the film about the dam busters many years ago but didn't know much about the history. I found it a fascinating place to visit. They were resurfacing areas of the path on top so the cafe was closed but I managed a walk along the length of the dam and enjoyed its atunning views from all angles.It's a stunning piece of architecture with the the added interest of the war story.If your in the area go take a look.

Very Impressive structure and lovely surrounding area with some pleasant walks. Nice cafe nearby as well. Makes for a nice visit.

We visited this dam driving through to Goslar . It was so well worth the stop. We had seen the film The Dambusters he day before and to see the actual dam was quite an experience. We took the boat trip round the lake which gave a different perspective and we recommend this. Patience is needed in the queue for coffee. We learnt so much on this visit and we also enjoyed a woodland walk in the woods on the far side of the dam.

I visited the dam whilst journeying across Germany by train. I stayed in Bad Sassendorf, a (nice) suburb of Soest, which was one stop (3 minutes) up the line from Soest. There was a regular train service which ran approximately every 30 minutes, in both directions.On arriving at Soest station, the bus to the dam (R49) is located in front of the stationhttp://www.rlg-online.de/service/120620_Boerdebus_Flyer_FINAL_WebVersion.pdf the destination of the bus is Delecke, rather than the dam wall (Sperrmauer) itself. The bus travels through Korbecke and then along the side of the reservoir itself as far as Delecke, then returns to Soest. I cant recall the exact fare, but it was something like 3.50 euros or so, each way (Prices in October 2013). While its possible to walk to the dam walk, a much better way to travel is to take the ferry which runs from Delecke around the lake to the dam wall.http://www.moehneseeschifffahrt.de/ (the ferry is seasonal, and stops at the end of October)I was able to walk across the dam, down to the base of it, back up and across the dam again in about an hour, in time to pick the boat up again when it returned. The boat then returns to Delecke where you can either wait for the bus back to Soest, or cross the Delecke road bridge, then walk down to the Korbecke bridge and cross back over the reservoir there and pick up the bus in Korbecke village. The walk is about 3 km and quite pleasant. As other reviews have pointed out, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling around the dam, and lake. If you have your own transport, and are interested in the Dambusters, then the Eder dam is about 90 minutes drive from Soest, in the direction of Kassel/Bad Wildungen, though you could spend more time at that location.

Last here was when i was 7, the bratwurst sold next to the dam still tastes great. The resevoir and surrounding area is stunning.

I had visited Mohnesee a number of years ago and thought I would take the opportunity to show it to a couple of 12 year olds.The reason for visiting is often based on the film The Dambusters and this was the case for us as well. The 12 year old boy knows the film and it was interesting to show him the dam in context and to show the downstream devastation that was likely wrought. Once that is out of the way it is clear that there is so much more to the place.It is a beautiful place for walking/running/cycling and nature lovers were out in droves, despite the fact it was a fairly miserable day.There are numerous activities and things to do. Unfortunately time was limited but if I ever get back there I would love to take a journey on the boat that cruises around.Gorgeous.

A wonderful beautiful place to visit, the dam looks just like the film. There is a wonderful walking/cycling route around the dam. Unfortunately the weather meant that it was too cold to walk far.

Visited the Mohnesee on a lovely Sunny Sunday. Did the cruise on the lake, then walked across the huge dam. Wonderful scenery and lots of history.

For anyone who's seen the dam in the film, the reality is very, very evocative. It's huge, and it looks exactly like it does in the film. The reservoir itself's evocative too. It's easy to imagine the scene, seventy years ago, with the planes coming in over the low hills, the cold, dark, choppy water, the fire from the towers...  To get to the dam from Soest, a taxi (late 2013) costs between €30 and €40 there and back, including a short wait at the dam so you can have a look round. The journey by taxi takes about a quarter of an hour each way. Soest taxi-rank is just outside the station. Alternatively, you can get a bus, but they don't run very often. There's a good information office inside Soest station.There IS in fact a museum about the raid, but it's near the Eder dam (the second), not the Mohne. It's even been reviewed on Tripadvisor. Search for "Sperrmauer Museum Edersee".
