Altena Castle is a beautiful structure in an excellent condition: that's because 90% of the castle was rebuild in the early 20th century and therefore is not genuine (which was rather disappointing for me personally). But because the look & feel of the in- and exterior, is that of a true medieval castle, and almost all rooms (including the towers and dungeons) are accessible, it absolutely still is a fun attraction!In 2014 an elevator and a small, underground exhibition space were added, which are accessible from the main street in the village and make the way up a lot more easy (not for free by the way; an additional admission fee is asked).

This place is a great find, but it is a challenge to get to. The castle overlooks the small German town of Altena and is an amazing presence on the hills above the town. Once you get to it, you're in for a real treat of classic history for this region. The castle is well preserved and filled with armor another amazing artifacts. Best of all, it's never busy. You're on your own to explore and enjoy. If you are ever in the area, take time out to visit. It will be well worth the experience.

Very open castle for walking around and great for kids but not for old people or wheelchairs. Don't go on a Monday as it is closed. The view from the castle is amazing and well worth the visit and there is a lift from the township if you don't want to walk. The township is struggling economically and you can see a strong Turkish influence from the 1950s. River and promenade are nice and plenty of places for gelato and coffee.

Great little castle, well organized exhibits. No guided tour- you wander the passages on your own, like you secretly wanted to do at Marksburg and Eltz.

A well set out castle with a clear route to follow around the castle. It was the first Youth Hostel in the world so extra history in the castle. There were a lot of stairs as you would expect in a castle. well presented and preserved. A steep walk up to the castle.

Well preserved. Good location. Especially interesting for children. Great view from the top. The cobblestones makes you feel as if you are back some centuries.

Die Burg Altena ist sehr interessant, und auch der neue Aufzug der einen auf die Burg bringt ist gut illuminiert. Der Ausblick über das Sauerland ist ideal für schöne Fotos und auch das Museum ist sehr interessant gestaltet. Das mitteralterliche Spektakel auf dem Vorplatz der Burg mit mitmach Aktionen finde ich gut und gibt einem das Gefühl in eine andere Zeit versetzt zu sein.

Achti

Tolle Location mit unvergesslichem Blick auf das Lennetal. Ein Juwel, das unbedingt am gastronomischen Schliff arbeiten sollte. Vielleicht wird dies durch den neuen Burgaufzug (Ein Erlebnis für sich!!) gepuscht und die gesteigerte Frequentierung geht in die Speisekarte mit ein. Hier haben sich viele auch namhafte Köche schon die Zähne ausgebissen, aber alle waren auch "ohne Burgaufzug" und die Besteigung dieses Burgberges ein schweißtreibendes Geschäft!

Die Burg Altena ist und bleibt ein Muss für jeden .Alleine schon die fahrstuhlfahrt hinauf ist der Hammer.Und dann der Blick. Auch der Rest(Kerker, Rüstungen ect.)absolut sehenswert
