The Volcano is the must-see place in the island of Nisyros. You can visit it in one full-day excursion (round-trip, bus + walk) from Mandraki.Take the public bus (at 9.15 am, 40 minutes journey) from Mandraki harbour to Nikia village (final stop, no ticket-fare, but donation!!) with wonderful views of the island on the route. Then, in NIKIA village, don't miss the main square (mosaic floor "cholaki"), the small white church with belltower, the typical streets and the fantastic panoramic views of the caldera from the top! Then, walk down the path from Nikia village to the crater (1hr 30min, not difficult). Then, after a drink at the Tourist Centre (no ticket if you arrive by foot!), spend 1 hour inside the volcano (be careful! of smoking holes, grey and yellow surfaces). Very hot inside the caldera (sunglasses and cap recommended!). Then, after another resting-stop at the Tourist Centre, walk back to Mandraki (3 hours) through a path that goes first uphill (towards West) until you reach a dusty road (ideal - I guess - for mountain bikes) on the other side of the island. More scenic landscapes on this side of the islands (barren mountains and views of the sea). No public transport, only walk. You will meet no people, only sheeps and goats. Finally you reach Mandraki from South (Acropolis-Paleokastro). A wonderful experience. Strongly recommended!

The tour guide we were given on this Thomson tour, really made it. Excellent knowledge of all local areas, attractions and sights as we travelled to the volcano. The heights and steap mountain roads aren't for the faint hearted. In the volcano you have to pay a small conservation charge. There are toilets and a cafe there too.Inside the volcano crater was amazing. You can't stand in one spot for too long or your shoes will melt. The guide told us we had cone at the best time of year. She said July and August is just too hot for some people, the smell of sulphur can get unbearable and she's seen a few people faint from the heat!In October, we were actually the last trip to go out there this season. It was hot, but comfortable enough to walk the steap, slippy slope of the creater, down and back up. The smell is unbelievable! Methane and sulphur! Like rotting eggs! But was amazing to experience.

We came over from Kamari Bay, Kefalos. Easy to book seats. The coach trip up the mountain was stunning. Forget "Ice Road Truckers", these guys know their stuff! Mountain one side and precipice on the other, with only a wandering goat to break your fall. You can't fail to be impressed. The crater, when you get there is deceptive. It's a fair trek down but well worth the effort. Hot springs bubbling up through the ground and sulphur vents spewing all around. Don't get too close, this stuff is seriously hot. Remember to look up. There are villages hanging over the rim of the major crater. You wouldn't want to live there and be a sleep-walker. I think you will enjoy it. Take water with you, you'll probably need it. No shade except around the cafe/souvenir shop.

It's great that you can get 'up close and personal' with this volcano. If you have the time it's also very worth while climbing the mountains behind the volcano and walking down the goat paths into the crater.Brilliant!

the volcano crater is marvelous ... under your feet you can feel the sea of boiling volcanic lava ...but unfortunately you also can feel like a product in a huge tourist factory ... you go there by a vessel, then they put you into the bus and you have only about 1h to spent in volcano, because you are assigned to bus ... of course you can always rent a car, but if it is the best solution ?BTW: except volcano it worth going along the bay though the city to the stunning stony beach ..

We took one day trip to Nysiros island, which included a visit to the volcano. The place is impressive being able to go down to the crater and take some photos. The entire area looks like from another planet, everything in a yellowish colour. Also the trip from Mandraki village to the crater was impressive too by passing the mountains and having spectacular views. Worth visiting if you are in Nysiros.

This was our 6th visit to stay on Nisyros. We always like to visit the crater as its such an amazing sight. We are independent travellers and this time travelled with our adult daughter. We wanted to take her and hired two quads between us. The best time to go is around 4.30 - 5pm after the tour buses have finished as it gets very busy and is too hot. We almost had the crater to ourselves! Its an amazing journey down into volcano - if you are very scared of twisty Greek roads maybe best to take a bus down. Views are fantastic!

Stefanos crater is actually the heart of the volcano. Do not hesitate to come close to the holes with hot steam, but avoid approaching too close because it is really hot! It is a great opportunity to remember everything you have learned in highschool about volcanos.

Fantastic day out, the guide was so knowledgeable. Tip make sure you have sturdy footwear as you actually walk in the crater and its hot underfoot.
