The National Theatre Belgrade was built in 1869 according to the design of Aleksandar Bugarski, the most productive architect of Belgrade in the 19th century. The decision to construct a special building for the theatre was made by Knez Mihailo Obrenović. The building was a typical theatre building at the time and was particularly reminiscent of La Scala, Milan, with regard to its Renaissance conception and the decorative finish. Later, reconstructions completely changed the original appearance. The heavy reconstruction was made in 1986 when the theatre regained the 1922 look and an annex was built towards Braće Jugovića Street. Beside theatrical purposes, the hall has been used for charity balls and concerts during the 19th century. The Great Constitutional Assembly adopted the famous 1888 Constitution in this building.

I went to the theatre at four different times to try and buy tickets to a ballet, as I kept being told the box office was open at different times. When I finally found the office open I was told the performance I wanted to see was booked out except for seats in the top level. These only cost 300dinar so I got one. However when I walked up the many flights of stairs to get to the "Gods", there was a velvet safety rail right in my line of vision when I sat down. I tried a few other seats, but my view was no better. As it came closer to the starting time, I noticed many seats unoccupied. I talked to the usherette and she said what you do is go down to one of the lower levels and a few minutes before the start the usherette on that level will let you sit in the vacant seats. I did this, but ended up in a box on one side of the stage where I could only see half the stage. This might have been OK for a concert, but for a ballet it meant I missed half the action. The ballet was based on the book "The Bridge on the Drina" by the famous Serbian author Ivo Andric. I really didn't have any idea of what the ballet was about as I had only bought the book that day and had not yet opened it. The whole night was an experience, but for USD4 for a ticket for a one hour ballet, I didn't mind too much. It was not the Met after all.

There are many theaters around the world that are far more grand and ostentatious than this one. But this is probably a miniature version of those great ones. It is not particularly attractive from the outside or inside, but very functional and comfortable inside. I found the mosaic on the roof dome in the theater hall to be very attractive. Not many patrons would bother to ever look up to admire the ceiling. However, the only peeve I have is that for the Opera I went to see, the sub titles were only in Cyrillic, making it difficult to understand what was happening.

Very good theatre , with lots of good and also quality plays. For the "bigger" shows you must reserve your ticket on time.

Very glooming minimalist shows - not worth the time and money. One was a retrospective on contributors to the museum, one was one one Reuben's painting, some impressionist rooms and a religious retrospective on the Cross.

It's not only a theatre it's also a very important Monument of Culture protected by Republic of Serbia.Founded in 19th century the building was a reminiscent of La Scala in Milan. Later recontructions changed the appearance.I love this theater and visit often both stages.
