Arrived for an afternoon visit while on cruise in the Adriatic.Weather was beautiful and found Split to be a very pleasant and friendly city.Went on a walking trip round the old town and found it very interesting and the locals were very friendly.Did not have a guide but found that getting about was very easy.The whole town could have been taken as a meditteranean town in its appearance and with its promenade cafes and bars.Well worth the visit.

I really felt good walking around Split old town. Had a guide for an hour or so, visited diocletian basements, peristile and cathedral. Strolled on my own afterwards, and really felt safe and everywhere you look you can spot an interesting building, or old house. thumbs up!

Getting around Split is easy, but obey all parking rules precisely or you will be towed and pay a lot to get your car back. Towing is so efficient there that it is, itself , an attraction necessary to be seen to be understood and even appreciated. My main point, however, is that Split is second to Dubrovnik in overall awe inspiring views and things to do. So, you want to build up to the climax and see Split first. Otherwise Split might seem disappointing. Walking the old city is the same as seeing Diocletian's palace which is within the old city...so don't be confused about that. Lots fo good restaurants and shops in the old city and walking outside of the walls next to the sea is also very pleasant. Most of the outside-of- the- walls hotels and apartments are up hills, so be prepared.

Had a delightful day in Split whilst on cruise. Beautiful place to walk about and explore, locals friendly and helpful.

very well restored plazas and palaces as well as many nice old buildings. plenty of shops and restaurants as well as bars.phantastic sea side boulevard with lot´s of outside seating.cannot find a negative aspect of old split

There are also reviews of the old palace ruins which are pretty much the same as old Split, with the possible exception of the older buildings outside the Castle ruins.In any case the entire area is well worth a stroll, with interesting finds around every corner where you can imagine life as it used to be. Highly recommeneded

I loved the Old Split, all the roman origins and buildings, including Diocletian mausoleum and Palace. The people are friendly, there is icecream everywhere and even traditional Croatian music singers. This a really nice place.

I liked walking about in the old Split. There is so much history in this place. Many come to Split and the surrounding areas only for the beautiful beaches, even though there are also so many other things to do and beautiful+interesting places to see as well, the old Split being one of them! I recommend this place.

Step back 1700 years to the time of the Roman Emperor Diocletian when he decided to build his square palace facing the harbor at the seas edge.This palace served as the core around which the current largest city in Dalmatia and the second largest city in Croatia is built. Once a military fortress and a fortified town for its'original residents, this large core of the current city now in addition to the monuments and ruins, is home to shops, markets, restaurants,and housing. As you stroll you see many buildings with family coats of arms. these remind you of the history of the city through Venitian, Austrian,and Italian rule, and later as part of Yugoslavia.Take the time to look at building walls to observe the brick andlimestone stonework, the columns and arches fountains and statues.There are a few larger, by historical standards streets, but most of the area inside the gates is connected by alleyways, courtyards, and very narrow streets. Tourists roam, while locals hang out their wash or watch out of the windows. It is not hard to get lost but you will come to an ancient gate, find your bearings and turn back into this lovely historical core. It is easy to get around by using information from the local tourist bureau, but if you are with one of the groups jumping off a tour bus or cruise ship you will need a guide to understand its' history, I recommend at least two days. On the first you can roam and get to know the palace area and nearby surrounds and use that time to choose which of the many historical Cathedrals, museums, Galleries,etc. you would like to visit on your second day. If you are able to spare a third day travel to nearby Sibenik and Trogar is a must. Also from Split you can take a ferry to many of the Islands nearby and up and down the shores of Croatia. You could easily be here for a week and feel that you have just begun to see all that there is to offer.
