We took a tour from Mendoza whose final destination was this monument at the border of Chile and Argentina . The drive from the valley to the top of the mountain on a sandy and slippery road was quite an enjoyable experience ( for some of us ) and worth the 5 hours drive to get there ! Our tour operator was Argentina4U and the cost of $42 was a real bargain !

This monument is located very high in Andes at 12500 feet or over 3800 meters close to the border of Argentina and Chile near Uspallata and it is over 110 years old. The whole csenery and the drive seem surreal and it is likely to be remembered for ever.

We drove through the charming castle-like gate to get to Christ the Redeemer of the Andes at 12,500 feet. Then up, up, up a long dirt switch-back road. Not a tough drive, but you do go slowly.The drive to the top is spectacular. The statue, the glaciers, the view of the switchbacks and the little town below. It was fun. This is the highest point between Santiago and Mendoza and the wind must have been blowing at least 50 mph at the top. Historic, too. This is where José de San Martin led his army into Chile to end Spanish rule.Bring a jacket (a hood is a plus) and long pants, then enjoy the view and being on the Argentina-Chile border. We visited in late March--the cold will probably make the trip impossible in the winter.There are vendors on the top--hearty souls. And they served wonderful El Submarinos--Argentina's version of hot chocolate- made with real chocolate. In fact the whole top of the mountain smelled like Willie Wonka's --even in the wind.Don't miss this stop if you have time!

Did a side trip to Cristo Redentor on our Mendoza to Aconcagua tourney and we were glad we did. One of great curvy roads in the world to get you from the valley to the statue at the top. It is a great celebration of priest who negotiated peace between Chile and Argentina and prevented war. Love having the flags of the two countries flying on each side of the statue.Great views of the valley and mountains.On the day we went it was very windy.Worth a quick trip up.

Si vas a Mendoza no podes dejar de ir al Cristo Redentor!Es un lugar impresionante, estar en el limite imaginario entre dos pais, la historia que tiene este lugar!Es realmente hermoso!

Subir hasta los 4000m y apunarse vale la pena para ver este monumento y todo lo que representa! Lleven abrigo, es increíble el cambio de temperatura y el viento que puede haber en este lugar!

Lo más impactante está en subir la cuesta, que no es poca cosa. A medida que se sube por el camino de ripio, se puede apreciar una vista increíble pero también temeraria a mi gusto. Es camino de cornisa y a veces para poder dejar pasar el auto que viene de la mano contraria es preciso poner el auto casi de costado, sobre la montaña. Creo que debería mejorarse el acceso porque la vista bien vale la pena. Es hermoso!

En turismo te advierten que en 8km, se salvan 1000 m de altura, con lo cual, a priori, es un camino para autos en buen estado, y conductores valientes.El camino, como es de esperar, es de cornisa, de tierra y muy empinado en casi todo momento del trayecto.Si tu auto tiende a recalentar, no lo intentes. Hay muchas combis que suben.Son casi 30 minutos de andar en primera y segunda marcha.Salvada la diferencia de altitud, las vistas son geniales.A casi 4000 MSNM, las vistas del Aconcagua y el glaciar del hombre cojo, como para el lado del Chile, hacen olvidar a cualquiera de la falta de oxigeno a esa altura.El el monumento al laudo papal que puso fin al conflicto de límites entre Argentina y Chile, y el monumento y el lugar están a la altura de las circunstancias. Unos meteos mas arriba del monumento, está el hito que demarca la línea fronteriza.Vale la pena el esfuerzo y la adrenalina del camino y se puede subir por Argentina y volver por Chile, o al revés, sin necesidad de hacer aduana, obviamente.Arriba, hay un puesto de ejercito, que no tiene ni baño, con lo cual tener en cuenta esto.

Es hermoso el viaje hasta el Cristo Redentor. El camino de ripio tipo caracol, te da una adrenalina incomparable. Queres parar en todas las curvas a tomar fotos. Una vez que llegas arriba, el viento es increible. Te volas. Pero es una experiencia unica.
