This place used to be a great hike when I was a kid. Nowadays you can take a small bus and then hike from the bottom of the hill. The summit is not in good conditions anymore, so going up to the top is a challenge now. The view up there is worth the challenge.

We were training for Pico Austria. The terrain was a bit of a challenge but it was well worth it and not too challenging. Breath-taking view.

What you need to do is grab a cab and ask to be driven to "el paseo de motos". You will be driven to a nearby neighborhood where there are several motorbike tour companies. We chose one of the larger ones. They have dozens of great bikes, all well maintained, one for each size person. And don't worry, nobody in your group is going anywhere until the guides watch you ride a 4 or 2 wheel bike whichever you choose. The 2 hour trek will guarantee the most beautiful view of the nearby snow covered mountains, hills and surroundings. You will enjoy this tremendously. Do bring your camera as you will regret not bringing the large SLR. Dirt bikes are dirt cheap to rent. They provide top notch helmets and safety equipment. All tours are guided regardless.

apart from the hike there is now a community initiative to provide typical local meals to those who want to enjoy more time up near the Muela and there is a great new camping site - Colibri Camping - in the valley nearby with amazing views of the Muela.

I love this place, although I think just driving directly there is a little boring. It is best to go after rainy season when the flowers are blooming all around the community below the muela. The views are great regardless, but if you can hike from the La Florida neighborhood across the ridges and then down into La Paz into the Pedregal/Las Almendras neighborhoods, it is a great hike with amazing views of La Paz. it is a good way to spend the day if you have the time. I would also recommend going really early in the morning or really late at night. If you go late at night, bring headlamps to get to the top and you will have by far one of the best views of twinkling La Paz you'll ever see.

Best view of La Paz from a different angle. You don't get to see the Illimani but you'll see the buildings of La Paz downtown, plus amazing mountain formations. To get there is not very easy you'll have to walk for at least 0ne hour no shade. But you can rent a taxi. However is worth the ride.

We booked a few day trips with Kanoo Tours whilein La Paz in September. We included the horseback riding excursion to Muela el Diablo and Valle escondida. This trip takes half a day and starts with a cab ride, which the stable reimburses, to a classy hotel in la Zona Sur where we met the local driver to head to the horse stable and meet the horse guide. The ride itself is about 3 hours. The terrain is interesting - mostly single track - the views are stupendous! Our guide was good - he spoke English even though we prefer Spanish though - the horses seemed in good shape which is important. We have some experience riding, but by no means are we expert riders. As usual, we were pleased to find reasonable "tourist" horses that know the trail and know what they need to do.All in all this was a fine day best described in pics, so I have uploaded some.

You can get a bus to get close to the Muela, but you will have to walk about 2-3 hours to get there. If you prefer you can get a cab to take you right up to the Muela. I chose to walk and enjoyed passing throught the neighbourhoods on the edge of town, up the mountain, passed a tiny village between two mountains and up to the muela itself. Amazing place, very quiet and you can see La Paz in the distance, as well as the imposing altiplano in the other direction.

Went up there a couple times, great views and a nice place to hike around. None of the hiking was too difficult, they have horseback riding and there is the start of a mountainbike downhill course up there.

Yes, you can see the Muela del Diablo from almost any place en La Paz, but one thing is to look at it from the distance and another very different thing is to be there, to walk up the mountain until you reach this very unusual rock with the shape of a sharp black molar. When we were young we used to follow the lonely trail with backpacks and tents to organise a camping on the top. On our way up we would only find a few peasants. Nowadays the city has grown so much, that on your way up to the Muela del Diablo you may find houses and many more inhabitants. The views from the top are still magnificent, the whole city of La Paz at your feet.
