This was the third and last winery I was able to visit during a day trip to the Colchagua Valley. (Montes, Lapostolle & Neyens are all along the same road in an area known as the horseshoe because of mountain range formation). I had toured the Veramonte Winery in Casablanca Valley that owns Neyens as well as some California wineries but I was unable to get a tasting of Neyens unless I went to the specific winery. I misjudged the time needed to do the tour & lunch at near Lapostolle when I called Roxanne at Neyens she was very accommodating to me allowed me to move up my tastings but told me she could fit in the full tour of the winery. I must admit I could die happy without ever seeing yet another stainless steel or cement tank, or being told about French versus American oak barrels. This being said we were happy to just experience the tasting. The building (circa 1890) in which the tasting occurrence is old but the winery itself was founded less then 15 years ago. Our charming guide Roxanne indicated the grapes in this vineyard are the oldest in the area and this building shows the age of the property. The tasting room itself was rather dark and despite having a modern bar area in the center in which the wine was to be tasted, the room was really too dark to properly see the wine. We only did two tastings; the 2009 & 2010 of their “Espiritu”, a carmenere and cabernet sauvignon blend, the only wine produced. The side by side tasting showed the dramatic difference between vintages. Kudos to Neyen for being the only winery we visited in the area to provide its guests with a designated sheet for making tasting notes. If you want quality rather than quantity tastings I would recommend Neyens. It will be wineries like Neyen that will make people unfamiliar the carmenere grape come to value this relatively unknown and unappreciated grape.

As my fellow Baby Boomers might remember, "Mikey" from the Life Cereal commercial was the kid who "hated everything." Well, even Mikey would have liked Neyen Winery in Chile's Apalta Valley. The property was magnificent...vines are far as the eye could see, protected by a coastal mountain range. Our guide and presenter Soledad was knowledgeable and personable. My husband and I are wine producers, and Soledad was not only willing but fully capable of answering our detailed and often technical questions. The Neyen winery is state of the art and absolutely immaculate, which as producers we know is essential to creating a wine of quality. The vineyard was equally impressive...not a weed to be seen, vines pruned and in perfect, balance, not a hint of disease. Soledad informed us that biodynamic viticultural practices are used, which impressed us even more. The proof is in the "pudding" so to speak, and when Soledad conducted the wine tasting, our high expectations were met.The production of Neyen wines is relatively small next to the wines bottled under the "Veramonte" label, which is also part of the Neyen portfolio. The Neyens we tasted were expensive and, in my opinion, worth the premium price. If you are wine traveling in Chile, you should put Neyen de Apalta at the top of your list. No shortcuts taken here. Even Mikey would have given this place a thumbs up!

A modern winery set inside some of the region's oldest vines. Its spirit is evident amongst the vines, in the winery (they suffered Earthquake damage but have rebuilt with care - leaving some reminders for visitors to obverse themselves) and with the team that make these special wines.

My husband and I visited several wineries in the region, and Neyen was our favorite. For a tiny boutique winery, Neyen is able to boast the oldest grapes in Chile, a beautiful vineyard nestled in the mountains, and what we felt like was the best quality wine.

Neyen is a wonderful boutique winery at the end of the road that houses a series of wineries in the Apalta Valley. It is by far the best! Rich in history, this vineyard is home to vines that are over 120 years old, a maturity that is reflected in the high caliber wine produced here. Their wine is a Carmenére and Cabernet Sauvignon blend which is released in limited quantity. Having tried both the 2006 and 2007, this is one of my favourite wines.I have been fortunate enough to visit twice. Incredibly friendly and inviting, of all the wineries I have toured in Chile this one gives the most personal experience. Also, bring your camera as the scenery is beautiful. I can't say enough good things!
