During the day you can buy fruit and fish, ceviche and watch the sea lions. At night there are souvenir and clothing vendors.

but quite small. What makes this place particular is that, alt least in genuary, sea lions climb up the fences protecting the market and lay there begging for fish leftovers that sellers throw them every now and then. It' s a good occasion for taking great pictures

Great place to buy fish and seafood, but also fruits and vegetables. It's a great place to know more about Valdivian culture. Photographers welcomed. You can see sea lions, pelicans and other birds.

The fish market is worth visiting if you're interested in seeing sea lions and birds, especially pelicans. The sea lions come to the market to eat the left overs.

We visited here recently while attending a conference in Valdivia and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The market itself is not especially large, but it is packed with fish, seafood and produce. We ate some great cherimoya there, were schooled on the various fish (take special notice of the conger eels, known as 'congrio'), clams, mussels and tunicates ('piure'). The river side of the market is also a great place to see vultures, cormorants, gulls and sea lions. In fact, the largest bull sea lions we saw on this trip were at the market. I highly recommend going to the market and taking one of the many river cruises from here to see some of the wildlife in the area.

There is a splendid produce market by the river bridge in Valdivia. It is a large roofed building with open sides selling fruit, vegetables, flowers and fresh fish. There is a tremendous variety of everything and the displays are very colourful. It is a popular place for local people to buy many of their needs and they customers and stall keepers are all cheerful and very helpful to visitors with limited Spanish. It is not just people who frequent the market though - the seals and cormorants like the fish section as much as anybody and nobody seems to mind when they get up on the stone slabs and help themselves. Sometimes a seal will take a whole fish and flop back into the river with it but one fat old sealion seemed content to stay in the river and eat the fish heads and guts thrown to him. The cormorants normally perched on wooden stakes driven into the side of the river but once in a while a single bird, or maybe a group of three would work up the courage to fly under the open sided roof and hop onto a fish slab hoping for easy pickings. It was amusing to watch but though we bought fruit and vegetables at the market we didn't buy any fish there.

It is small but very nice surprise. People are friendly and you see many (and I mean many) different animals all over the place waiting for a peace of fish to step in their way. Several species of birds and sea lions make the place (not the cleanest) a feast of energy even in a rainy day.

Nice little open market with a good selection of fresh local produce and seafood, open during the earlier hours of the day. There is a great deal of resident wildlife (sea lions, sea birds) nearby that eat the scraps thrown away and offer great picture potential. Nearby are many shops and restaurants that offer locally brewed German style beers. At night the market transforms into a night market with vendors selling other non food related fare (gourd mate cups, woodwork, jewellery, etc.). Visitors to Valdivia should visit at least once and enjoy this big feature of local life.

Interesting, novel visit to this little market on the water. While at first it appears to be a regular market, the difference is that there are sea lions calling out for fish scraps behind the market (behind a gate) and there is actually one which is inside the market! Vendors are friendly and willing to engage in conversation.

Great little fish market, watch the fish sellers and sea lions interact and get yourself some great bargains then go eat awesome fish and chips in the market opposite with a giant flagon of German beer. Great lunch and afternoon.
