a nice little manmade walkway. You will probably see flamingos and other birds by and in the water. the salt crystals and their reflection in the pools are something to see.

Salar de Atacama is my third salt flat, after Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and Salinas Grandes in Argentina. All three salt flats are very different and warrant a visit, if only just to get different perspectives and photo opportunities. While not as large as Uyuni, Atacama holds its own with its stunning rock-like salt terrain (Uyuni boasts flat, hexagonal salt slabs). Most tour groups stop along the main road for a couple of obligatory photo opportunities. I did the tour with Pachamama by Bus and the driver drove us all the way into the heart of the flats, using a smaller and less-traveled road only used by mining trucks for some of the best scenery in the salt flats.

The place is unvelievable. The salty rocks, the distant horizon and the beautiful flamingos form a surreal scenery. I would never imagine that the shape of the ground could leave such a beautiful impression on my mind. It is a very peaceful place, great to watch nature in one of its most beautiful forms. We went on September and it was quite cold during the morning, so be prepared.

beautiful place, so peaceful and quiet, the lagoons are mirrors in the ground. Please do not disturb the flamingos.

There were 3 lakes to see on this trip. Two are thankfully reserved for the birds and nature, one is available to visitors to swim. It is lovely peaceful area. The salt lake was not too cool so we managed a little swim. One bops around like a cork, a very funny feeling indeed. The black mud and salt when applied to body has amazing effect. After a little rub and a rinse one's skin feels like a little baby's . Easy day. There were a few flamingoes about which added to interest.

Some friends and I took a van from Antofagasta, going through Peine town, the road is sort of good, but it was long. When we get there, we were a little bit tired. The place is so peaceful with a lot of flamincos and other birds, some little lizards were around too. The salar is extrange and beautiful, if you are around you should not miss it.

The pink flamingoes were just beautiful. The bathroom facilities are very basic with no water to wash your hands so take your own supplies.

My husband and I visited Salar de Atacama on July, as part of our visit to San Pedro de Atacama. We took a van with other guests of our hotel. First we watched a very informative video about the Salar, which is a very very big flamingo reserve. The reserve is really big and we got to visit just one part of it. After the video, we took a walk around the place and waited for the sunset. Stunning! The landscape gets colorful and the volcanos look beautiful. It´s worth the visit, specially if you go in the afternoon for the sunset.

It is so calm out there you can hear your thoughts. The salt flats are amazing, swimming (or floating!) in the lakes, saltier than the dead sea, is a must!

When my husband chose to visit the Salar de Atacama, I had my concerns. Yet, after traveling close to 2 hours from San Pedro de Atacama, I was very impressed with the natural beauty, interesting landscape, and the flamingos in front of us. It was late in the afternoon and the sky was signaling a potential rain storm with gray skies. It was awesome! If you go, do take rubber-sole shoes and rain gear, just in case.
