We traveled to the Fuertes Parrot Reserve from ibague where we were staying. We were picked up at 3 am to be driven an hour where we swapped our minibus for a 4x4 vehicle. From here it was a several hour journey along the road to the reserve. Unfortunately the road had broken away due to rain, and was impassable by road an hour's walk from the reserve. We were at altitude here and it it was really hard going hiking up the mountainside. The Fuertes Parrots were only seen early morning and so we had to hike fast. At one point I thought I was going to vomit, but was encouraged along by my companions. When we reached the reserve, it was a very steep hike up the mountainside, which was difficult at the altitude. We finally reached the spot where we could view trees where they could be seen. It was 9 am and so very late to see the parrots. However, we were lucky to spot one flying from one tree to another which made the hike up worthwhile. It was very beautiful at the top and is a site to target if you can.
