The city is like a carnival all the time! Put on good walking shoes and get moving. All the little restaurants were great, wee tried lots of local foods.

The walled city of Cartagena brings you back to the Spanish colonial times with beautiful architecture, much history and a relaxed feel. It's a colorful city with many plazas, old churches convents and museums that allow visitors to experience a bygone era. The city is vibrant with many pubs, restaurants, good food, and shops with local artisan's crafts. I recommend at least a day to fully experience the city.

Hmmm well it's definitely really pretty and if you've made it out to Cartagena you can't really miss it.Basically it's nice for an afternoon/evening to find some overpriced food and contrived 'Latin American vibes'. Walking the walls at night was nice. The museums were small and unappealing, Plaza Bolivar was cool as you can see street performers rehearsing there in the early evening. Wouldn't spend much more than that though, pretty overrated for our money. You can read our blog for more Cartagena tips, if you fancy it: https://ednaventures.wordpress.com/2014/11/05/cartagena-de-indias-fire-mud-tv-in-a-bin-bag/

I'm a sucker for old colonial towns now that I live in Antigua, Guatemala and the Walled City was no different. I loved the architecture, the colors, and little squares. The vendors selling knick-knacks and every variation of fried food. Go early or in the late afternoon to avoid the heat. Past 10am and it makes any walk around town or on the wall quite miserable. Grab a paleta (think fudge-cicle in Colombian flavors) at La Paleteria to beat the heat, or a mojito - they're good just about anywhere. Sunsets on the wall are quite beautiful, and feel amazing with the cool breezes off the water. Peek into the churches or enjoy shopping at the fancy shops. Steer clear of the horse-carriage tours. I never once saw a driver giving their horses water in the week we were here and saw two horses slip and fall on the street - one of the drivers being quite cruel to the horse to get it to stand back up. If you're planning some time in Cartagena, it's worth a day wandering around and enjoying the charm.

A superb and absolute must see in the city. Visiting the area without doing so would be a significant lost opportunity. Furthermore it's truly the gate to excellent restaurants, pubs, sights and sounds. Lots of history surrounding an excellent vibe of life and culture.
