Loved the Castillo which is well preserved and provides beautiful views of the city of Cartagena. It is a large fortification with tunnels and walkways leading to different levels of ramparts. A must see.

Had a lot of fun here - the castle is really striking and you can have enjoy being a swashbuckling lad on the battlements (if you like) in the vicious heat. The tunnels were evocative and the views were great. It's a little expensive and unless you take a tour (for more money) it's over quite quickly. But decent nonetheless. If you'd like some more Cartagena tips, check out our blog: https://ednaventures.wordpress.com/2014/11/05/cartagena-de-indias-fire-mud-tv-in-a-bin-bag/

The castle represents one of the few historic and interesting portion of this city otherwise famous for the walled city.

It is worth the visit to the Castle and see the view and the tunnels. I recommend to go late in the afternoon to avoid the heat.

My pirate-obsessed twin 4-year-old boys loved walking the castle grounds and taking the tunnel tour. We paid an additional fee ($40,000) and took the tunnel tour in English, but really included the whole castle grounds. Lots of interesting information on the history and we enjoyed learning about the different rooms and their unique architecture to help fortify the castle. There is no signage in the castle so you wouldn't know anything about it without. Our guide's English was not perfect but it was enough for us to understand what he was saying and he did a great job of explaining things in ways that our boys would understand. The view of the walled city from the top of the castle is pretty cool, too. Go in the mornings. Cartagena gets hot by about 10am and makes this tour a sweaty mess. Bring some cold water and snacks as well as they don't have vendors on the inside. There are lots of ramps outside the castle with lots of stroller access but the tunnels are a different story - lots of stairs and the tunnels are narrow and low. Bring a Bjorn if your kids aren't up for a lot of walking. Go fight some English pirates for an hour or so - it's fun to pretend with your kids!
