Even though throughout the journey none of the snow capped mountains where visible due to heavy clouds, the whole experience of visiting the highest built train station in Ecuador (3610 meters above sea level) and by the magnificent Chimborazo, was great. as an Ecuadorian, I feel so blessed that we can show the world all these marvels!!! Do visit!!

I'm extremely happy to say that this trip changed my life. I got to see beautiful landscapes with the help of their trained staff. The seats are very comfortable and the food at each station is delicious.

I came with my partner at the Riobamba station on Saturday evening willing to buy a ticket for the next day (having my passport with me as per advice in other reviews). The guard (in front of the entrance) handed me a brochure with the routes, prices and pictures. All nice. Then the guy from the tickets point approached me and explained that only group of min.8 people can go (I was only with my boyfriend). We though we might try in the morning to check if there are other tourists. At 7.45 am on Sunday we did not see other tourists; however there was almost empty train waiting at the station, but from what I was reading it was a regular train not touristy 'autoferro'. I was told I cannot buy a ticket despite the fact that the next station was Urbina as this is long distance train to Quito, tickets cost a lot, which explanation just does not make any sense at all. There were a few local passagers boarding the train and going to Latacunga but it seems tourists are not very welcome. Also I guess it is too little demand to have Autoferro operated. Normally I don't write reviews if I don't use a service but I found official available information (both on the internet and brochure) very misleading and I lost one day in Riobamba.

This is definitel not a train, I agree with the other person thay called t a 'bus-wagon' but when you are in it, it feels like a train!! To buy your ticket they ask for your passport or cedula, I didn't have either on me so theu jusy asked to see a bank card or credit card with my name, no problem! Before you get on the train they check your ID and tickets at the desk and then when you get on they rip a portion! Along the way they haven't set up railway crossing lights so there are about 3 motorbikes that make sure cars are stopped and the intersection is safe to pass!! My husband loved that!!! At Urbina station you give your ticket again before getting off and they rip it and give it back. At the station we we give an hour and 20 minutes. There is a mini zoo....hahaha jusy cuy and llamas you can pet, a museum, gift shop with ice cream, coffee and an empanada which is included!!!! It's $11 and for Senors $7. It was an hour to get up to the station, an hour and 20 there and another hour to return. They said you can now buy tickets on the website but I haven't checked but they said you can buy at any train station tickets for an train in Ecuador! I don't find Riobamba personally that interesting so if you find yourself there with time, I would recommend it!!

I totally disagree with the previous reviewer as we did not have any spiritual experiences were not asked for our ticket at all after the start and the whole experience was for us fantastic. I would recommend. it. It is not expensive though they do offer senior discount for over 65s and the length of the whole trip is 4 hours.................we had lovely scenery then stopped at the top for coffee and empanada included in the price. There were llamas and a donkey and we had such fun with taking photos with them with another couple on the train. A great experience.

OK, the ride through the mountains was nice and pretty and all that I had expected, but the "spiritual moment" when we asked to switch off our mobiles because they interfere with waves that you are supposed to feel in some particularly sacred place drew the line. After going through a terrible load of bureaucracy that seemed more appropriate to Soviet Russia (you need to show your passport just to buy a train ticket) and being asked to show your ticket at every stop (there were only 9 of us on the whole train!) as well as the police motorcade that personally escorted us through every junction, it felt like we were on absurd theme park ride where you pay people to perform ridiculously unnecessary tasks. It's no wonder the ticket is so expensive!

It is a nice short train trip in an "Autoferro" (bus-like wagon). It goes to the Urbina station, where you can do some activities but in a very short span of time.

I give a low rating to this activity because I could not do it ! We were a group of 14 and we tried to make reservations on the internet site but it was out of service . We then tried to contact the reservation service by telephone and all we got was a message to leave our coordinates and they would contact us : nobody did ! We tried to get reservations through our hotel but the answer was that people had to show up in person and pay upfront ! When we showed up , we were told that tickets were not available anymore and that you had to buy them 2 weeks ahead of time at the train station !!! The worst part is that we saw empty seats on the train when it left ! When we asked how come , we were told that these seats were left (in case of ) for locals who use the train as a mean to get home !!!! We were also told that the same procedure applies in Alausi and Quito !!!!

We waited for half hour, the police man didn't put any order so some guys cut us off the line even though we had the next ticket, they didn't care, we wasted our time trying to catch it.I wouldn't recommend it at this point, it has a long way to go before it can serve the public in professional manner...

This tren ride made for a great day. Leaving from Riobamba's beautiful new train (Tren) station it travles through the ever changing Ecuador countryside ro Uribe where another very nice modern station awaits with great empanadas and beverages af all sorts served by native indigenous people. The train stops at the station for about two and a half hours and during that time there are numerous activities available including horse back rides, bicycle rentals and a museum and artisan crafts store. The return is over the same route with magnificent views of Chimbarazo.
