I passed through Guamote on a Sunday and found it to be a sleepy little town with hardly any tourists. The people are friendly and will wave as you pass by, kids are happy to pose for photographs. Some shoe shiners can be a bit persistent. It makes a nice stop if you are travelling between Riobamba and Alausi.

Just spent the day in the market in Riobamba. The Quenchua people come from all over to display their goods. From early morning bus loads of indiginous people come carding goods and children on their backs. The main market is fruit and veggies but there is also a market in the Plaza Orientals which is full of clothes and shoes. The third place is the Plaza Conception where ponchos and other goods from Equador are displayed. So if u need presents this is the place to go.

I spent some time in Guamote and the Thursday market is the high point of the week. There is a Saturday market in Riobamba but its not a patch on this. This is NOT a tourist market. The Quechua people come from miles around(this is Indian country, not Spanish) and the streets of this unpretentious town are packed full of stalls with everything under the sun for sale at low low prices. A good place to buy a sombrero though most of the stuff may be a bit heavy for the trip home. Dont be afraid to try the street food, as many people feed their families on the street as its so cheap. You'll find the people friendly, just smile and try your tourist Spanish on them. They want to make a sale but they are kind and not pushy.

Wir haben extra in Guamote übernachtet so dass wir am Morgen bereits um 8:00 auf dem Markt waren. Da gibt es wirklich alles. Besonders toll fand ich den Viehmarkt.

Das ist ein bunter und irrgartenartiger Andenmarkt! Hier waren wir die einzigen Touristen. Hier werden die Schafe auf den Bus geschnallt oder auch in den Kofferraum gepackt und die Schweine laut grunzend über die Straße gezogen (nicht dass ich dies gutheiße ich bin Greenpeace Aktivistin aber ich unterscheide zwischen Kommerz und Natürlichkeit). Manche Laufen barfuß herum.

Jeden Donnerstag strömen die Bergauern mit ihren Erzeugnissen - Früchten, Gemüse, Obst, Tieren - in das kleine Städtchen. Man sieht die bunten Trachten der Frauen, die ihre Kinder auf den Rücken gebunden tragen. Es wird genäht, in großen Töpfen gekocht, Hüte werden feilgeboten und ganze Schweine gegrillt. Man sollte möglichst früh dort sein. Von Riobamba aus fahren ständig Busse nach Guamote. Dieser Markt ist von Touristen n och nicht überlaufen. Fotomotive gibt es in Hülle und Fülle. Alles ist ganz authentisch und unglaublich sehenswert.
