We chose to go here on our last morning and were disappointed. The building is an interesting old building but most of the rooms had no exhibits.

Personally, I am not a big fan of modern art. So for me to appreciate an artist's efforts in this genre, it has to be presented to me in a way I can understand. At this, another free museum, Modern art is displayed with enough room for each sculpted piece to be viewed 3D. The museum is in a remarkable old convent building, immaculately cared for. The displays are in halls, small cells, courtyards and highly polished hallways. Appropriate background music follows you. Take a few moments and sit with the bronze hummingbird and appreciate that the building is one with the art. Nice to visit just after opening to enjoy the quiet AND THE ART. Well dne and it's free

Let me start by saying I'm not a big fan of modern art, which I'm sure colors my reaction. The museum has a number of little rooms with strange videos and unusual groupings, like "food as art." Not my cup of tea. There was one large room, filled with paintings by a Cuencano, Luis Crespo Ordonez, that I liked.I would rate the museum as "average" except it is FREE so how can I complain AND it's located on the very pretty Plaza de San Sebastian at Colonel Talbot and Mariscal Sucre. Worth seeing. Also on the Plaza is the San Sebas Cafe, open for breakfast and lunch, owned by gringos, with good food. On Wednesdays at noon, English and Spanish speakers meet on the 2nd floor of the restaurant to practice their Spanish.There is also a bar on the plaza, farther up from the restaurant with drinks and a limited menu that is a nice place to stop. I've forgotten the name.So the whole package--museum, plaza, restaurants--bump this up to "very good."

The showing of Luis Crespo Ordonez's work was fantastic! I'd never heard of him before and viewing his paintings was a great experience.

This is a donation only museum. It has around 30 small rooms of various kinds of art (paintings, sculpture, etc). Very nice but not a huge place. One can go through the whole place in under an hour. It is around 5 blocks from San Francisco plaza and is easy to walk to.

I had a little time and had promised myself a visit to this museum so I headed inside. The museum is in a building with small rooms, each with a video presentation or a collection of art works.Unfortunately I underestimated the time I would need to tour the exhibits as they deserved so this is as much my impressions as it is a complete review. there are small gardens each with plantings, sculptures and places to sit an enjoy the garden.My impression of the displays of paintings that thry were a riot of color that deserved more time for study than I had available.My two thoughts as I left are that this museum is worth the time you spend there and that I must return and spend the time this museum deserves.This a cultural site that is well worth the time and effort to visit.David B

Went here after reading the Lonely Planet submission which said it had a 'highly regarded collection'. We saw a bunch of pictures drawn by young schoolkids, two small rooms of semi interesting art with poor/non existent descriptions, and some photos taken by Uruguyan women abroad, again poorly curated and not much to write home about. Really not worth it, but there is a lovely plaza outside to take a break from the busy city streets. And at least it's free.

The building was interesting and the exhibits quite good. I really enjoy the works displayed by young children between the ages of 8 and 14 much more than the 'real' artists.

This museum is like nothing I have seen before, its a beautiful building with lawns and grounds, and mostly consists of smallish rooms each with their own exhibit, depending on your taste, any given exhibit could border on silly or brilliant, but who cares. Its free but we always leave a couple bucks. If in El Centro its a few block walk and well worth it, then maybe have a beer at the brew pub on the plaza.

We have been there 3 times in the past year. I am always amazed at how bad the art is. With only a rare exception, it is stuff that belongs in my trash can... :(
