Do not be put off by confusing reviews. Yes this factory no longer produces meat or meat products, but it is NOT closed. It is very open, for tours, and for usage by local businesses and government offices.In fact, the tour we went on was our guides first tour. They have Spanish and English speaking guides here, luckily. They are working on getting some Portuguese speakers for the Brazilians out there. The tour itself was extremely interesting, and the guides really know their stuff. From the museum, to the coolant and compressor rooms (the factory produced electricity enough for itself and the town),through the killing rooms (creepy), and finally the even creepier meat storage lockers. We learnt a lot about Uruguay's role in WWII (the factory passed from German to English hands after the conflicts), and about the history of the factory, of course.We even got to see the Casa Grande, where the director of the meat company lived. The factory is severely worn down now, and with cement falling from the ceiling, wooden floors ready to collapse, and asbestos coated pipes corroded by ammonia, the factory should be viewed at your own risk, but definitely before they restore it all and you do not get to see all that cool stuff.Our tour was quoted to be about an hour or two, but if you demonstrate some interest, the guides are happy to show you everything. We were there 4 hours, and afterwards, they even helped us get a taxi. Worth a visit to Frey Bentos, but you can also get to see this factory from Argentina from Colon. The restaurant is closed Mondays.I personally enjoyed this tour just as much or if not more than the tour of the Itapui dam.

This is the home of what was Fray Bentos - a name associated with our generation and whose products we have grown up with. It was a must see and did not disappoint. The factory is now closed but they have preserved many objects of interest in a large two level museum. These items are looked after by a most charming curator who knew the history of every individual piece. The top floor of the museum is a set out as per the offices of the time. Look out for the scrapes on the floor made by the wheels of one office workers chair and examples of the first types of photocopiers. We combined our walk round the museum with a guided tour of the actual factory and then onto the Casa Grande - the mansion that was the factory managers house. Our guide was an absolute delight and made the tour fun and interesting by telling us not just the history but also little anecdotes related to the time. It is sad to see what was once the "Food Factory of Europe" now in such disrepair. But the visit did give us a sense of how it had been in its day and the scale of one of the most innovative operations of its time. So happy we made the effort to go. Two notes of caution: It is virtually impossible to get to via public transport - we ended up hiring a car out of Colonia and doing the fast drive via Ruta 2 to get there and then ambling back via the coastal towns on Ruta 21. Also, ring the museum before you go to check the times of the tours which are not always as advertised.

Stuck in Fray Bentos with nothing to do? Travelling through Western Uruguay and interested in the history of Beef products? Be sure to check out this museum.The location is great - the old meat packing factory and the little barrio that grew up around it. The staff are really friendly and helpful. All the curation is in Spanish but they have some leaflets in English too. It probably won't change your life for ever, but it's well worth a look and to be honest, if you're in Fray Bentos there's not a lot else to do. Be sure to walk there along the Rambla, it's a beautiful stroll.

we were staying in Carmello, hired a car, about an hour drive, roads are diserted. When you come into town look for Barrio Angelo Patrimonio Historico Nacional the Museo de la Revolucion some locals very helpful and there is an information point in centre of town lady was so lovely, not a single word of english, but used the map and signs to try and show her what we wanted.the museum is like going back in time, as if someone walked out leaving everything intact.it is possible to see the machinery that was used, posters and see employees names and the vast numer of different nationalities that were employed there.during the 19th and 20th centuries coinciding with war and helping the soldiers. Leibigs salt factory was a major exporter of beef using the deep sea port was able to recieve even deep sea vessals.try and find someone to help you we were given a 'hand out' and lots of Corned Beef labelsBEWARE- when we went they suddenly closed at 2pm so get there early ( not sure when they open though)

Pasamos antes de ir a las cañas ya que está de paso por las cañas, es muy antiguo y se realixa la visita guiada pero todo se puede ver rápidamente

como todo museu, ele e um destino turistico apenas para quem gosta de historia. mas vale a pena conhecer a titulo de curiosidade

este lugar esta camino a la cañas por la costa del rio, vale la pena parar y hacer el recorrido guiado, es de la epoca en que estuvieron los capitales inglese

Hicimos un rápido recorrido ya que está de paso por las cañas, es bien típico del lugar pero todo se puede ver rápidamente, con media hora fue suficiente.

No es nada caro y vale la pena. Hacerlo con el tour guiado, que es como se conoce verdaderamente la historia del lugar.

Excelente museo, totalmente recomendable. La guia que nos toco, excelente ! todo muy bien conservado. Hay un sector nuevo de vehiculos muy interesante.
