Stopped here for lunch and on realising the art gallery is VERY small we took the tour! A wealthy land owner bequeath sees some good Australians art on display. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed!

Apart from the free internet which is a scarcity around here, the gallery which has a lovely cafe overlooking the lake, the gallery itself has works from the who's who of australian art including Tom Roberts, hans heysen, McCubbinn, Arthur streeton, another great benalla surprise.

Benalla people are lucky to have such a thoughtfully designed gallery building in a charming green location (charming provided there is water in the adjacent lake/waterway!). The permanent gallery includes some significant Australian artists, and in the gallery shop I was able to buy an inexpensive book featuring a lot of the gallery's artworks to give to a friend with an interest in one artist (Buvelot). Our group of three friends found the large indoor-terrace café fine for morning tea.

Being able to sit outside on such beautiful days is amazing. Wish you could get all day breakfast everyday not just weekends.Food lovely but limited menu now. This is a shame as the menu was great but changed recently. Staff helpful and a great part of the gallery.

Love this place always visit when in the area. Small but with some good pieces and they have traveling exhibitions well worth a look. Great restaurant right on the lake with a covered large veranda. Food is good and they have lactose free milk. Try the spicy chai latte.

Exhibitions take time to organise and quite a lot of effort, I have been associated with the Art Industry for 25 years. The Benalla Nude is one of those exhibitions that took 5 years to establish; the prize money was a handsome reward. Unfortunately I did not like the winning piece of art work and felt that external Judges should have been asked to Judge the Exhibition. The piece may well be topical but there are many other pieces in the show that deserve to have won, two of the commended pieces are better than the winner! The reclining pregnant lady, small but beautifully portrayed at '33 weeks' is a fine example of small things come in tiny packages. I also felt that other paintings that did not get exhibited could well have been shown in the smaller gallery, although I am told these had been shown in another Town.Next time, 3D Art would be nice to be included! A difficult task and it has been a good learning curve for me as I want to have our own nude exhibition in our country Town which I believe will take at least three years to organise. The restaurant attached to the Gallery is a terrific idea and the small gallery shop is a bonus.

Interesting permanent exhibition. Varied and diverse special exhibitions. This small gallery punches above its weight in promoting Australian art and artists. Don't miss it (gold coin donation for entry. Also, enjoy a decent cuppa with a great view at the café.). Children are tolerated, but need to be well-behaved.

Bennalla is a country town with a lot of pleasant surprises... the river board walk, the expansive rose garden and of course the gallery to name only three. While of modest proportions the Gallery shows every sign of being professionally and actively curated and a quick surf of the internet leaves little doubt that it's received international recognition. The gallery is on the international calender of art events and has been for some years. It is a wonderful thing to see a country town on the map for such things normally reserved for more rarefied locations. When we visited in December, the Williams exhibition of his Pillbarra works were on display. Fascinating and important as this was, it did not overshadow the results of an international art competition the Gallery was conducting nor the items on display form the gallery's own collection. This is clearly a quality venue and the staff and management have every reason to be proud. The gallery's locations is well chosen. It rests between the river and the rose garden making for a very pleasant walk or a opportunity to relax on the lawns. The gallery also has a little cafe which offers a limited range with an outside area overlooking the river. It's always a good indication that they can make coffee properly! If you are in the area I'd definitely recommend setting some time aside to enjoy the art, the gallery and the environment around it

A small regional gallery with 3 largish viewing rooms. The artwork is curated with exceptional skill - the 'permanent' gallery has artworks representing many Australian prominent historic and contemporary artists - Nolan, Boyd, Williams, McCubbin to name a few. The special exhibitions were excellent - Jack Dale Mengenen Kimberley works were breathtakingly beautiful and Fred Williams Pilbara series managed to capture the heat, colour and beauty of the harsh outback. The gallery houses a small book collection available for sale and a cafe serves simple (somewhat pricey) meals and drinks, in a comfortable air conditioned indoor area or outdoors balcony overlooking the water fountain in the river. Current exhibitions are listed at http://www.benallaartgallery.com/exhibitions or on their facbook page https://www.facebook.com/thebenallaartgallery Well worth the visit.
