This has to be one of the truly great roads for driving. All sorts of switch backs take you through a mountainous area where many cyclists add to the degree of difficulty. Make sure your brakes are in good shape before venturing!

Nice place to visit for one day trip, 90 mins driving from Christchurch one way. Must to try the fish and chips store.

We rode out to the Banks Pennisula, took some side roads, got fabulous photos of the rugged terrain and the bay. We ended up in Akaoroa and wandered around checking out the little shops and eateries. We had a fabulous lunch outdoors at the Brasserie Wine Bar and Gardens....devine! There were many other little places that looked like they had great food too! What a great day trip if you are near Christchurch. Amazing how quiet and uncrowded everything was (Jan 24) .

There is so much to see on the Banks Peninsula. Close proximately to numerous walks overlooking the ocean and the city. Not to be missed!

Just got back from Banks Peninsular and we are so glad we went. Beautiful views from the summit road, although there isn't a designated view point. We stopped at a safe point on the road and took some photos. Akaroa is a small place, but has plenty of eateries and small shops to browse. There are boat trips if you feel inclined. Much to our amazement cruise ships come to the harbour. I'm not sure if I would want to be there when the passengers are on shore. Lots of windy roads going up and down, as normal for NZ.

Greatly enjoyed our trip to Akaroa. The scenic drive is beautiful though don't plan to drive it in a hurry. Went kayaking at Pahuta reserve which was a lot of fun.

Much bigger than it looks, it is quite a drive to Akaroa. Lyttleton is interesting to see. Use the Dyers Pass Road in preference to the tunnel to get great views of Christchurch.

Saw and learned more about penguins, kayaked with Hector Dolphins. Stayed the night in cabins and relaxed in the beautiful surroundings. Great walks.

Took the trip to Akaroa via Tai Tapu and over the hills. Took the long way back through Lyttleton Harbour. Make sure you take some time to stop at the small towns and cafés along the way. The view of the penusular from the top on both sides of the hill are outstanding. Try to travel off the beaten track as well as there are some very nice bays that are hardly used.
