Banks Peninsula is a wonderful place to drive a car or ride a bike to catch some fabulous views. You will have it all - great city, alps and ocean views.

Love taking the Gondola to the top of the Bridle Path and walking the Crater Rim track to Godley Heads, beautiful views and great day out for the family particularly during February when the tussocks provide a stunning contrast to the turquoise waters in Lyttelton Harbour

If you have time hire a car and drive to Akaroa out on Banks Peinsular.Enjoy a good French style lunch in the township of Akaroa before heading back to Christchurch.Be brave get the map to and drive back along the unsealed roads to Pidgeon Bay, Diamond Harbour then round the bay to Lyttlleton and through the tunnel back to Christchurch.

You will need several days to explore this large area especially if you like walking. Remote bays although some only accessible by 4 wheel drive vehicles, native bush reserves which give an idea what the area was like before the settlers arrived. If time is limited then it is worth taking the Summit Road and enjoy the breathtaking scenery, also a least an overnight or two in Akaroa where you can take a boat and enjoy this lovely harbour where the small hector dolphins swim. A good selection of eateries and coffee houses.
