At about the half way point on the drive around the island, the cheese shop is original, historic and culturally unique as these cheeses were the first made in North America and continue to be different from what we get at cheese shops at home.

So much potential here. Virtually no selection of cheese, and what was available, was simply average. I would not recommend on coming here. Such a good idea for this, but it just falls short...

Mostly they sold cheese disks "for roasting". These were very popular. We bough a nice aged cheddar, which was very creamy and tasted great. Price was much less than the market in Quebec. There was some food, beverages and cheese to eat on premises, which many people did.

The advertising for this establishment describes 3 cheeses made on the premises, and other local cheeses(which I took to mean, from the island). When in Quebec, I look for local cheeses, particularly made from unpasteurized milk, as these are not generally available in Ontario. The day of our visit there was only one house cheese available, Le Paillason, which was delicious when grilled (as it is intended to be). It is apparently made to a recipe dating back to the first French settlers, but it is made with pasteurized milk(!). The other cheeses on offer were from the Charlevoix region, and nothing special. There were a few other edibles for sale from the island, such as relishes, jams, etc. There is a charge for samples, with no refund if you make a purchase.

They make excellent cheese but the 1$ to sample one piece? Come on! The least they could do is offer customers a 1$ rebate on a brick of cheese if you've paid to sample it. Also, we politely ask the cashier for 3 plastic cups for our wine but she said no and only offered us styrofoam cups. I asked why and she said they were saving the plastic glasses for spruce beer. After reminding her that we had just spent 35$ in their store, she finally agreed to let me have ONE plastic cup. That's what I call bad customer service!

An other interesting stop on the island is this small historic artisan cheese factory. The technique and receipe to make this kind on cheese almost got lost throughout the years and the actual owners saved the tradition. They make 3 kinds of cheese. The cheese called "Paillasson" is simply wondeful (especially when heated in a pan).It will be a short stop, not much to do or see here but worth it for the great taste of those cheeses.

When exploring the Isle D'Orleans we stopped here...I wouldn't plan the whole trip around it. A bit disappointing....not much to see or try. However it is a wonderful destination if you want to see a lot of the island.

One of many stops we made on the island of Orleans. We went for the Medium Cheddar Charlevoix. It was excellent when paired with strawberries and bread we bought from other locations on the island.

We were very excited to put the artisant cheese crafter on our program but they did not really want us to get the guided tour since we were only 12 people... They told us that they were very busy people and small group are too much work!!! They of course let us know that we could still do it if we paid the 20 persons fee! or just stop by the store to buy their cheese !!! we just waved from the road ...

Don't think that this Island is just for Cheese. It has great art galleries, to suit all tastes, and some great food stands. Quebec has a reputation for great hot dog and the Island does not let you down. Try them.Don't visit this area looking for exciing things to do, but do look for great scenery, great local arts and crafts and just a great feeling of the culture. Visit Old Quebec while here, as it is just a 10 minute drive away.
