You won't need a lot of time to see St. John's Anglican Church but it's worth a quick stop and not too far from everything in Lunenburg

August 2014 I traveled to Lunenburg.. We had a fabulous time staying at the Ashlea House (see my review). We wanted to get the whole Lunenberg experience that included a horse drawn carriage ride. This turned out very well because it gave us a overview of the town, peaking our interests in places away from the downtown streets and introducing us to the unique buildings of this seaside town. Seeing the beauty of the St. John's lead us to come back and visit the church. The interior was so beautiful. The young tour guides gave us a general history. I noticed an advertizement for an organ concert with the British organist who played for Prince William/Kate's wedding. I came back in the evening for the concert to be greeted by kind Californians who live in Lunenberg each summer. They invited me to share their snacks (homemade cookies), introduced me to other local friends and directed me to share with them great seats in the balcony. The concert was amazing but to be able to share it with new 'friends' made it better. Even if you can not attend a concert, stop by the church and see this amazing church which reflects the mariner theme in its architecture.

It was a beautiful church, and Lunenburg itself is just a beautiful place to go and drive around through. While the people were friendly enough, it was also cold and rainy... which meant there was not a lot of places to go, and the Church was locked that particular Monday to the public... so hoping to return at some point to have some better access.

What a gorgeous building, high on a hill with the old harbor in the background. What beautiful craftsmanship inside. What amazing acoustics, perfectly used as a venue during the annual Folk Harbour Festival. A must see when you visit this historic town.

The church is beautiful in itself and interesting for its rise from the ashes after a serious fire. Take a cushion if you have: wooden pews can be hard sitting. For the concert I found the acoustics poorly adjusted with the band often overpowering the singer but this is probably the largest venue available in Lunenburg

A wonderful place to visit for an historic experience. The wood of the church was intended to duplicate stone masonry work and it does this beautifully. The inside is a special place to chill out and relax. Worth spending a quiet, contemplative half hour.

This building is significant both historical and architecturally - the rebuild from the fire is amazing. It is a very beautiful church both inside and outside. Well worth the visit - take the time to go inside and enjoy the quiet and solitude and reflect on the history of the building.

Pleasant church in historic Lunenburg.Interesting to hear of the history of Canada's second oldest Protestant Church including the fire and the restoration thereafter.A peaceful place well worth a look.Recommended.

An amazing achievement to rebuild after the fire to such a standard and friendly people. Our guide was excellent on the coach tour - a retired history teacher.

I had a very pleasant experience in this church. We just happened to drive past it and wanted to have a look because it was very intriguing from the outside. The inside was equally beautiful! As it was October, it was decorated with pumpkins and had a wonderful ambiance. I met 2 very friendly and helpful men inside, one who was practicing for an organ recital in the following days, so it was fantastic to be able to listen to that while exploring. Definitely worth a visit, and to hear the story of the church.
