This place looks like out of world. You will see this place hides so much in it, rusitng iron, sulphur, fresh tar coming from earth and thena spring of water. You need to have guide which is from government and charge 30 TTD per person and its worth trying. I will recommend you to go in eve as during day, it will hot with sun on and lake is all black so intensify the heat further.

Headed here on Carnival Tuesday, while the madness was going on in Port of Spain. It was part if an all day tour with a private driver for us. It wasn't very busy for obvious reasons, and our guide Mr. Langley was very pleasant, taking the time to answer our many questions. It was interesting to see the remnants of shoes etc that the pitch had half 'eaten.' And at the end, we saw the most beautiful pond of lotus flowers, which we were permitted to walk through. Cute ending to a rather different experience overall. I would go again, it was only about $10 per person. Not something you see every day.

there is a lot to learn from a visit to the pitch lake. goto the office and pay the $30TT each for guided tour, you will not regret it. come prepared for a swim in cooling pools of mineral water

I got nabbed by an unofficial guide as I was walking into the area. I really didn't mind as he gave us an amazing tour. It's an interesting spot and was pretty cool to see the different areas of the lake. It doesn't take long to see the area and is really easy to get to using the maxi taxi.

very knowledgeable guides. The whole visit was informative as well as enjoyable. Our guide even carried umbrellas as rain threatened. My guests loved being able to manipulate the tar and also take a dip in the sulphur pool.

This is the largest pitch lake in the world and is something you will not see anywhere else. If you are driving it can be quite hard to find as there are some major roadworks on the way. Look for an official guide who is very knowledgeable- some unofficial guides charge way too much. You need suitable footwear for walking through water and bring swimwear if you want to swim in the pools which are supposed to be very therapeutic. It is interesting to see the tar oozing out in different places. The lake is currently being mined at a steady rate and the level has dropped gradually - it used to be quite a few meters higher, nearly to the village. It is said that if mining stopped the level would rise again.

This is the third time I visited the pitch lake. On previous trips I have gone with the unofficial guides, however this time I pulled into the tourist centre and went with an official guide. He was quite knowledgeable about the tourist centre had clean toilets and a shaded picnic area.

The Trinidadians call this the 8th Wonder of the World. The pitch from the lake lines the streets around Buckingham Palace. Wear flip flops and bring an umbrella in case of occasional heavy rains. Our guide Garvin was great.

We had seen pitch tar pools in other countries but nothing like this! Its a natural wonder that really makes you think ... and great fun. You need good footwear (that you don't mind getting wet if you are there in a rainy month);guides speak only english - and heavily accented - and are very knowledgeable. the whole thing is very interesting, makes you think, and great fun, we loved it!

You need to take flip flops or crocs to walk on the lakeQuite interesting but if you are going in the rainy season make sure you take your own wet weather gear - our guide took extra umbrellas and we had enough each - but then extra people joined the group once we had left and when it rained they got the umbrellas and I was left with nothing and boy when it rained it rained - this was in the morning and I did not dry out all dayIt's a long drive - over 2 hrs from port of Spain so if you are short on days there are better things to visit
