Have been going to St.vincent for many years and never knew this place was there. What a fantastic find, just off the main road in Layou, off a dirt track side road, can ask any of the locals they will be more than happy to direct you or even take you there, as they are very friendly people, its justs 10 mins away from Buccament Bay Hotel.Had to pay a small fee and then was shown around, first we went into the Gallery to view some ancient pictures then we were taken into the grounds where there were large engraved stones. from centuries. There was a beautiful little stream and there was a really nice Gazebo, would be great for Weddings.Great Find, thanks to the Management for making us feel welcome.

Cheap well worth a visit if you have time. This is the easiest petroglyph to find, there are more around the island but they are difficult to find. The large rock is located in the jungle next to a small stream. The area is very beautiful.

The petroglyphs lie just on the outskirts of Layou, a charming, traditional seaside village on the western side of the island. It's a short drive off the main road, up what essentially is a dirt track, in most places, single traffic only. But not a worry as on the day we visited (Saturday), we were the only vehicle on the road to the site and when we arrived we thought that the facility was closed since there was not another taxi or visitor in site. There is no proper parking lot, so just pull up alongside the front fence of the site building. There's a window with a girl accepting admission fees. We had inquired on the availability of postcards or souvenirs but none were readily available. She did produce a box however out of which she fished a stack of postcards in one design. My husband spotted a brochure around the back when we got in so at least we got some basic literature. On the inside, the same girl met us in a room with photos of other petroglyphs sites on the island and some frames giving brief info about petroglyphs. She basically said that no one really knew what the carvings meant and that was that. There were clean bathroom facilities available. We then headed back outside with our driver who walked us down a side path to the one large rock with the ancient carvings in it, the rock is just a short stride (less than 2 minutes walk) down a gently sloping path and we understand that out of all the petroglyphs on the island, this one is the most easily accessible, though it may not be suitable for the disabled. There are some old stones/foundations now covered over with vegetation and this makes the immediate area around the rock very pretty indeed. The actual carvings were faces. Our driver told us that it was a family. We thought they looked like robots or perhaps aliens! Since no one actually knows what the drawings are or what they mean, it is really up to every visitor's interpretation. It may not be everyone's cup of tea and thus not worth it just to visit the petroglyphs on their own but it is certainly a unique experience and worth a stop if you're on tour, passing by or visiting Layou.
