It's as mask place but worth the visit as you get to see the brown bears at close range as you take the visitor bus. The elderly guide shared passionately with us in simple English about the place and could give details of each of the bear we sighted along the route. He even handed us printed materials in English so that we can read up and better understand the bears. The staff at this attraction were very attentive and proactively arranged for the bus to stop right at the entrance for our elderly dad who has problem walking. It's a great experience.

Sohoro Bear Mountain is located next door to the Sohoro Ski Resort slopes. The entrance shares the same building as the ski area’s entrance. It is worth mentioning that this place, in my opinion is very humane and appears to be a sanctuary not a zoo. The enclosure is wooded and very natural and well done. While not massive, it is very large and has a relatively small number of bears (just over a dozen). It looks like they do some kind of research at the facility. The bears do appear to be happy and don’t display the usual odd behaviours that stressed animals exhibit at many zoos (repeated movements like head nods, for example). I really support the work this place seems to do and I prefer to see humans put in the concrete box as opposed to the bears. It is their forest after all. When we went, they had 3 different visit options at different prices. Their cheapest was entry to the elevated walkway (JPY1836 per adult) into the heart of the bear park and a small viewing enclosure with exhibits on bear ecology, a large glass viewing window in a ‘pond’ and a window into the bears den. The walkway is about a 5 minute walk. The second option was a bus ride (JPY 2916 per adult) in an armoured bus around the park’s grounds. The final option was for an additional 1000 or so yen (can’t remember the exact figure), you can have your chosen entry option plus lunch (last order at 2pm) at the nearby (2 to 3 minute drive) Sohoro Resort. We went for the bus ride which also includes entry to the walkway area. The bus ride is short, about 20 minutes but we got to see plenty of bears lying around the grounds. At the end of the bus ride, they drop you off in the enclosure where a keeper comes out to do a talk – although in Japanese only… With all that said, from the viewing walkway, we did see many of the bears as the walkway is well positioned and has a fair height to it. So one does not need to go on the bus to at least see a bear. In the enclosure and at the right times, the keepers toss treats for the bears. Also, we did see a bear sleeping in the den.I was sceptical of the lunch at first, but was happy with the food. On the day we went, they had 2 set menu options for us, hand cut soba with grilled pork yakitori on rice and salad and also a beef fillet with a creamy dressing and rice with soup, both meals with free hot tea. Both were good and I’d say worth the price we paid. The staff at the resort and bear park were friendly, although English limited, although we had no troubles at all. If you wanted to purchase anything from the bear park but forgot, the resort where lunch is has a shop that sells a smaller range of things that are also at the park. I don’t usually fall for souvenirs, but I did like the mugs they served us tea in, so I got that from the resort’s shop.

Bear parks in Japan are notoriously grim - cement prisons with rotting food, rusty bars and gawking crowds throwing peanuts. Finally - one of the bear parks is trying to improve conditions ( and of course their business) - so Bear Mountain, at the foot of a ski slope in the center of Hokkiado is a welcome change.A 15 hectare wooded site has been fenced in and 18 male bears have been taken out of the hell hole at Noboribetsu, Hokkiado and transported here to hang out amid trees, grass, running and muddy water, birds, bugs...TWice an hour some humans on a Jurassic Park-style bus come around the dirt track and the bears glance up from whatever they are doing...or not doing...Humans can also walk across the site on a skywalk way - and bus and walkers end up at the central observation point where big glass windows let humans and bears eyeball eachother.Staff do a bit of discreet feeding to make sure the bears are doing something when the bus comes around - like pushing a pile of wood out the way to get to the food pellets, or standing to reach for apple bits...Some of the older bears look battleworn and have no ears, after years fighting for a life in Noboribetsu. But - all in all - it's a BIG improvement on other parks in the region, and although the bears are obviously still human-dependant for food etc, young bears that actually grow up in this kind of space might one day hopefully do less of the awful begging for bits that the commercial bear parks encourage to entertain the punters.Of course there shouldn't be this kind of park at all...but if bears are in captivity and people want to see them...Bear Mountain is a hopeful sign that tourist attraction managment in Japan are waking up to the world standards now of animals in captivity.Worth a look if you are crossing central Hokkaido- it's about 1.20 south of Furano...
