Very colourful and loud temple celebrations. Not allowed into main Hindu area of the town as a non-Hindu and this did dampen things slightly, There are other temples locally which can be accessed close up.

The Choroonu/Annaprasannam area is clearly marked. It is a hall located right on top of the ticker counter. There is no need of advance booking for Choroonu, although you can do it if you want to. The ticket is 20 ruppees. All you have to do is walk in with your kid to the choroonu area and provide the booked ticket. The priests there will provide your kid with prasadham on a banana leaf, and you and your family can feed your little one for the first time :) Leave a Dhakshan as you please below the banana leaf. There are no additional charges. The swami dharshan queues get quite long, and it might take up 2 hrs at times. But if you visit the temple during early mornings or evenings, there is almost no crowd. Our parents took 2 hours for the dharshan(10 AM), whereas we had our dharshan in 30 mins(4 PM).Also remember that during festival times, kids below 5 years are not allowed inside the nalambalam/main prahraham. So plan accordingly if you are travelling with your child. There will be brokers trying to bargain for money. Don't entertain them. We had the opportunity to see a small parade like custom, where the urchavar travelled atop an elephant serenaded by two other elephants, with chenda melams and kombu instruments. It was an awesome experience.Prasadam: There is a process to getting the prasadham. Buy receipts - the counter will open at 5 itself, although the queue starts forming at 4.30 pm itself. After you get the receipts(in case you bought payasam) you have to get plastic containers, and there is another counter for that. Just show the payasam receipt there and you will be given containers. Take that to the prasadham counter, and you can get your prasadham. For those interested the milk payasam was awesome. We bought 2, and regretted we did not get more.

When I visited there was Bharatnatyam concert going on in honour of the lord in the open hall next to temple. A different experince altogether.

The temple has a beautiful feel and energy. Unfortunately it's almost totally drowned by the negativity emanated by the people around. Very little civility/humanity, the ill treatment of animals. Why the elephants??? I don't know. It was never the original practice. Not sure if God would have wanted that! Why do people visit a temple if they can't practice what is preached.

Guruvayur is a must visit Lord Krishna temple if you go Kerela. This temple has a lot of historical significance and buzzing with lakhs of devotees every day right from 2AM in the morning to offer their prayers. This temple is however very strict with dress code and all people must adhere to dress code in order to visit it ie dhoti for men and saree for women. The Temple also offers all its devotees free food as prasad.

Kerala is the divine place where every visit to a temple can be called the awakening of the soul or reconnecting with God. This is my second visit to Guruvayur Temple. The first time it was an early morning temple visit at 5am. This time I wanted to be present at the time of evening prayers at 6 pm. It was a beautiful sight when devotees lighted the wall of lamps surrounding the Krsna Temple. I witnessed devotees rolling on the ground around the temple to honour their promises .This trip was also the time to honour my own promise too, because during a whole year I have been ill and could barely walk. By the grace of Guruvayur whom I prayed regularly at home I recovered from my ill health and is able to walk ! The temple lanes are interesting as many religious statues and other prayers trinkets can be purchased .

Praying here sets mind at ease.Rush has increased over the years.Men have to remove shirts and only wear vesthti (dhoti). My visit was much before July-14, but some things about Guruvayoor temple remain and will continue to be the same.1. Plenty of puja items to buy enroute.2. Plenty of devotional songs, music, shlokas to buy nearby.3. Many veg restaurants enroute.

Guruvayoor temple was initially within the Madras Presidency but right now in Guruvayoor, Thrissur Kerala. It belongs to the States of the South and numerous number of devotees come here everyday. One shouldn't enter the temple premises with pants, shorts, shirts, bunions. you must wear only Dhoti(Veshti) with/without towel over the chest for Male and sarees or chudithar for females.

Its rated as one of the most popular temples in the country but the last few visits make me wonder if the olden day charm that this temple is no longer to be seen. It only longer queues, more rules and lack of that spotless cleanliness that we normally associate with temples in Kerala and Guruvayur temple in particular.

First of all this place is my native (mother side) and so I visit the Guruvayur temple once a month or so..Great mental relief every time I visit this temple. Sadly non Hindus are not allowed inside temple premises. One point to note as the saying goes that if one visits Guruvayur temple then to complete this pilgrimage one must also come and pray in front of Mammiyoor Shiva temple near by.After prayers one can also go to nearby Aanakotta (Elephant care centre) to see n number of elephants being taken care of which is again a must visit place in my list..
