There are so many better churches to see in this part of the world, so I would choose to see others to see this one. But if one goes to see it, one should pay the entrance fee to see the ruins to understand how huge and great the cathedral it once was.

ABC stands for Another Bloody Cathedral or Church which is what this is. We have seem quite a few in Central America and this one is not better or worse. We are amazed howver how the Catholic church still extracts pennies from the poor to buy lavish ornaments and pay for the upkeep of these places when these people can ill afford it.

Beautiful shell of the original main cathedral. The ruins are magical. Admission is one dollar. The best one dollar I've spent in years.Be sure to have your camera.

When you visit Santiago Atitlan you must visit one of the oldest churches (1548) of Guatemala just behind the market. You will be surprised of the clothing of the statues and the atmosphere in the church and the monastery behind. After that you can visit Maximom.

The Cathedral itself is very impressive, even if you have seen others. What stood out is the ruins of the old cathedral that was rebuilt twice after earthquakes and then left when a third extensively damaged the structure. There are some support structures holding up the walls but columns that fell were left, making it seem the earthquake just happened. The entire structure is huge and you can gain a full appreciation of what it must have been like.

Currently under renovation, the cathedral is lovely in the interior with high ceilings, great art work, beautiful frescos and a calming energy. Be sure to bring your camera. When the days get hot outside, it is a great place to cool down (and even get some shut eye). The church dominates the square with governmental buildings surrounding it. There are lots of places to eat in the area for lunch or to get a quick coffee.

the Cathedral is very nice, located close to the main square, with a very nice museum behind it - ruins of the old part before the earthquake

lovely building with interesting past. There was a school-leaver's ceremony taking place when we were there, sharp contrast to the leaver's rituals in UK

Dominating the view from the central square. Impressive interior, assorted ruins outside. Visited as part of a walking tour of the city.

The cathedral is absolutely beautiful to view as you stroll around the Plaza. You have to imagine how magnificent it looked back in the 1500's. What an amazing history it has.
