This is an exquisite location and was formerly a biological research station. There are 3 categories of rooms. The most luxurious ones are very large and beautifully appointed with wonterful animal carvings and custom furniture. The meals are simple. The electricity is only on in the evening beginning at 5:000 pm. The station sits on a beautiful river. One can go fishing or visit archaeological sites or see where red macaws nest.

Laguna del tigre is a gem, a birders paradise and the river alive with wildlife. The guides are knowledgeable and the walks are fascinating (but don't forget the mosquito repellent!!) However sadly during out stay the lodge was undergo works and the noise was appalling for the duration of our trip. They said they had workers from Guatemala city in (that was the excuse) but they insisted on walking directly past our window (leaving little privacy when we wanted to relax) and in the adjoining rooms they played loud tinny music on their phones and made other pretty horrendous noises (I won't expand). A beautiful place no doubt - just make sure they aren't upgrading it during your stay!

I've been to Las Guacamayas on two separate occasions for two weeks each time, both in 2013 and 2014. As a research station, it's one of the most comfortable I've stayed at and without making a negative impact on the surrounding environment. The area itself is incredibly diverse with the possiblitlties to observe everything from Jaguars to Tapirs, Crocodiles to Coral Snakes and Scarlet Macaws to Howler Monkeys. The staff of the research station are very helpful and friendly and the food fantastic. I couldn't recommend it enough!

As a wildlife biologist I have been working with Las Guacamayas Biological Station since 2012 and have spent many months over the last two years working in the forests around the station. The wildlife is plentiful and abundant, the staff are welcoming and the place is one of the most tranquil places I have ever been to. Watching sunset over the Rio San Pedro from the bedrooms is an experience I will never tire of!

I stayed at Las Guacamayas for two weeks as part of a volunteer project, and I was very happy with it. The food was lovely, the lodgings were simple but comfortable, and the people onsite are very friendly and enthusiastic (knowing some Spanish is useful) - but of course, the real appeal is the setting. Not only is it incredibly picturesque, but there is wildlife of all sorts everywhere - the birds and howler monkeys are the most obvious around the station, but there's plenty more to find when you look. I also enjoyed the sensation of being away from civilisation - it's a very peaceful place, though a little less so when the howler monkeys are roaring! Very highly recommended for wildlife enthusiasts.

This is a great getaway. Very comfortable, great food, quiet, incredible birdwatching. A lot of nature, animals -if you have some luck- you can even see a Jaguar -or many-. In the middle of the jungle. Great riverfront.

I wanted to experience the jungle during my trip to Guatemala, and after visiting Tikal, I found this place that was near Flores. It was difficult to find much info so I will attempt to give more details for you. You can book directly with the station, or through a travel agency, but you will need Spanish to deal with the station. No one there spoke English, so be sure and reserve an English speaking guide if you don't speak pretty decent Spanish. We were picked up at our hotel in Flores, on time. There is a short drive on a paved road and then you turn off onto a bone jarring 4x4 dirt road for about another hour and a half. After arriving at a small river community, you are transferred to a motor boat for the last 30 minutes of the journey. We were welcomed with a cold drink and shown our room. (there are only 4 guest rooms, plus rooms for the researchers on site). The pictures shown on their website are accurate, the rooms are new and outfitted nicely. There are mosquito nets for use at night, although we were there in dry season and weren't bothered too much by bugs. No a/c of course, but there were ceiling fans, plenty of electricity (generator) and hot water. Meals are included, and are just served to you with no menu choice. Portions were pretty small, we were both hungry after meals, and were happy we brought some granola bars and trail mix of our own. Maybe if you fill up on the tortillas served at all the meals, you would be full. Basic food- grilled chicken, fish, or beef with a small scoop of rice and a bit of veggies, but it tasted fine. Filtered water is always available for you to fill up your water bottles, so no need to bring any extra. Our guide took us on an afternoon hike of around 2 hours to show us the jungle plants and animals. He carried powerful binoculars to show us birds higher in the trees. The hike is strenuous, with some steep parts. You end up at a tower to see the view of the river and area, and he had a cooler left there by someone with ice cold drinks, which was greatly appreciated. You can go back to the tower on your own later if you want; it was close to the rooms. Later, he offered us the option to fish or kayak. He followed the kayak with the motor boat, which was appreciated, as there are no life vests. After dinner, we went on a night tour to spot nocturnal animals. Saw a couple pairs of crocodile eyes, and an owl, but not much was out. Be sure and put on your bug spray for this one. The next morning, we drove through the jungle on a 4x4 trail to the archeological site "El Peru". There is not much to see there, as it is a fairly recent find, and is still being uncovered. There were no big turtles in the nearby lagoon, but that is nature.... We did see some of the red macaws, and they are gorgeous. Also a few turkeys were walking around. Our guide brought cold drinks and offered us meat and cheese sandwiches for a snack, but since they had been in his backpack in the 104 degree heat for 3+ hours, we declined. There was room in the cooler for them, so not sure why they would not be chilled. After a shower and lunch, we made the long trip back to Flores, and did see a large crocodile laying on a log in the river, so our guide stopped the boat so we could see it better.Recommendations- if you are into bird watching, bring your own binoculars and stay an extra day. The trip to/from Flores is not fun, and having an extra day between trips would be nicer. We actually saw more animals at TIkal with a jungle tour, so that was a little disappointing. Bring a swimsuit, there is a small pool similar to a hot tub, but with cool water you can sit in to cool off. Other guests there did tell us that monkeys come each afternoon to the trees near this little pool, but we were off on our hike so missed that. The station will quote you a price that includes the transportation from Flores, room, meals, and guides. The transportation is the pricey part, so a longer stay helps ease that a little.
