We live in Milimani at the moment so couldn't pass up the chance to walk up Menengai to see the crater - totally worth it!We walked, and left home at 7:15am, arriving at the gate 5 minutes later. The gate was closed and no-one was there so we didn't pay, just walked around the gate, so the trip was free for us. We're really glad we left early, it's 7km from the gate to the top and it's consistently up hill so walking in the cool was a must. It's not a difficult walk - the road is wide and clear, but as I said, it's up hill all the way. Took us about 2.5 hours to get up, passing through the forests devastated by a large bush fire (news reports say 300 acres burned) yesterday. Views from the top are great. We didn't walk down into the crater - we'd probably say to do that you'd need to get a lift up to the top. But we did stop in at the new cafe/bar/restaurant that was put up in December. It will offer cottages and camping later this year, but the bar and restaurant are open and you can buy cold sodas for 100 bob and beers for a little more. Peter is very friendly and was keen to tell us the myths surrounding the crater. We started walking back down at about 10:30 and all shade was gone - it was HOT and dusty, and the down-hill slope was quite hard work on the legs and knees. Make sure you have plenty of water, sun cream and a hat because by the time we got back to the bottom at 12:30ish we were hot and tired and in need of a shower! We'd definitely recommend going up Menengai, alongside Nakuru NP and climbing Sleeping Warrior out towards Elementaita. But start walking early and be prepared for hot weather!

The hike is moderate, so even inexperienced hikers can make it without much struggle. Going down to the crater realm though is tough and challenging. When you get to the the top, the views are just breath taking

The crater is very close to Nakuru and it offers a splendid view of the countryside. It has limited bird life for the bird watcher. There are some hiking trials.

Its around a 20 miute ride by motorbike from the center fo Nakuru. By foot it takes around 3-4 hour. Very straightforward road, first paved, later a dirt road. From the top of the crater there is an amazing view of the area, unfortunately though not in the direction of lake Nakuru. Its an easy trip once you are in Nakuru, but not a "most do".

We hike from down going up, the terrain is very hard-going and also slippery so we used our hands to hold the ground. it was very fun and adventure

There's not that much to see in Nakuru after the Lake Nakuru National Park so it's definitely worth a visit. Easy hike and fun to do as a couple, family or with friends. The first time we went I didn't want to pay so trekked through the back and my local friends showed me some amazing caves, once we got to the top the views were beautiful. The paying entrance is best for solo travels or people who don't know where they're going.. If you're with locals or feeling adventurous I recommend you find the caves on the way. Take water and wear trainers, maybe a snack to have at the view point too!

overlooking the beautiful lake Nakuru and town Menengai Crater is a fascinating place. This time we took a Tuk Tuk from Nakuru Town but previous times we had hiked or traveled by car. Wonderful place for hiking , picnicking and sight seeing.

We started this hike with about 40 people, including many children. About half of our group turned back before descending into the crater, but with 21 people it was very slow going. The terrain is a little hard-going, slippery in areas and pretty step in others but all in all, it was not a difficult hike. In a smaller group, with relatively fit hikers I think the hike could have been completed in 2-3 hours. However our group took 6 hours.

This place is organically beautiful. Had to pretend to be deaf because they wanted to charge me more because foreigners are charged more. Good thing the dude didn't know sign language because I was making up stuff. I felt completely free. It's something divine about this place. I will never go to Kenya without coming here. It's every great emotion rolled up in one. Thank you Nick and Eve for taking me. This place changed me.
