The infrastructure is run-down but it's worth the stop; at least for a walk on the beach. It's nice to go at the end of the day (5 pm) when small fishing boats return from the sea.

This is probably the place to go if you're looking for things to do in Nouakchott. Prior reviews correctly suggested arriving at 14:00 or later to see the fleet coming in after a day's fishing. If the smell of fish bothers you, it's best not to visit. Also, a prior review mentioned the need to wash one's shoes after visiting - she is correct. The following day, I still had the smell of fish guts eminating from my sneakers.

Granted there aren't a lot of things to see in Nouakchott, but this would be impressive anywhere. Hundreds of fishing boats line the beach, with a multitude more waiting their chance to get ashore. The colors are amazing, and the locals go about their business as if you weren't there. Tourists are few and far between. On the day we were there, we saw no other tourists the entire time.As for the complains about the odor, what do you expect? This place IS a functioning fish market. The smell wasn't any stronger than most harbors in the developed world. Do yourself a favor and get out to see a slice of life unspoiled by the tourism industry.

Thousands of wooden boats lined up along a wide sandy beach with donkey carts and haulers bringing in the catch and fishermen setting off to fish again. Boats come in at 2 PM but the sun is too fierce for photography. Best time to capture good shots is between 4:30-5:30PM.We visited in the New Year and many fishermen (who are from Senegal) were on pilgrimage in Senegal. Back around 15 Jan. when we were told there would be even more actvitity. If entering from the market note that you will be stepping in methane and rotting fish juice that smells like pig swill (silage) and you won't be able to get the stench off your shoes without hand washing them immediately with strong detergent. It made us sick, so the second time we viisted we asked our driver to take us there via a sand route to the bathing beach further down and we walked about 5 minutes to the hub of actvity.

A good place to spend a couple of hours. Interesting sights. Sandy beach and warm water (didn't swim myself though). Enjoyable watching boats and people, check out the local catch etc. Breath in the sights and smells.

Well worth a trip if you find yourself in the Chott. You can buy fish or just check out the amazing long wooden boats. The afternoon is the best time to go.

It is out of the city so you need a taxi there but it is worth it. Go there in the afternoon, around 2pm and you will see boats returning with there catch
