Twickenham is a historic district of Birmngham with an outstanding collection of historiic houses. The ages of many of the houses are marked with outside signs, construction dates ranging from the early 1800's to the 1920's. A really great place for a drive or walk to see some truly beautiful architecture.

Picked up a brochure at the Visitor Center and parked downtown. I managed to see most houses on the tour, and walk a little over 5 miles. It's very interesting to read the history involved in several of the homes. Twickenham is a very beautiful area to take a stroll through, very clean, felt safe walking alone and made for good exercise.

What a surprisingly beautiful part of Huntsville. We simply drove up and down at random and saw gorgeous historical homes, some decorated for the holidays. Worth the drive.

After eating the hotel breakfast in Huntsville, we set out to discover the Twickenham Neighborhood. I had read that the Twickenham Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. Its name is derived from an early name for the town of Huntsville, named after Twickenham, England. It has quite a collection of grand old houses, ca. 1818 through the 1860s. There are several fine examples of Federal and Greek Revival architecture. The area is said to contain Alabama’s most dense concentration of antebellum homes.I recommend visitors to this city take an hour and enjoy this part of town.

We had a local historian who accompanied us and he made the area come alive. All of Huntsville is very historic and anyone who visits needs to take the time to learn how important the town is.

The houses in Twickenham are amazing beautiful. The history behind this part of Huntsville dates back to the civil war era. I did a historical walk around the block and was so thankful I took the time to learn about Huntsville in this manner. So worth the effort to see.

Having family visit us in Huntsville we wanted to entertain by taking the $15 Trolley Tour through Twickenham. Very informative, I didn't know Huntsville was once named Twickenham. The houses are charming and the city is fortunate they survived the Civil War. For those tempted to take the tour, it's first come first serve over at Alabama Constitution Village every Saturday, the trolley leaves at 1000 am. The trolley seats are hard wood designed for "fit" people who are not too tall. Visitors can walk the streets for free if they dont want to take the tour but summer can be harsh and spring nearly as bad, pick your season and take the stroll. The trolley breakfast of a muffin and a coffee was nothing to write home about. I may take the trolley tour again, I feel like I could have learned more.

We live in this neighborhood and we've taken the tour with our friends visiting from out-of-town. Whether on a bus or walking through on your own it's just lovely. The antebellum homes are stunning. Lots of fun little shops in the downtown area, which are in easy walking distance. We are so lucky to live here and welcome everyone who wants to visit.

Absolutely stunning homes, especially the old antebellum houses. Loved seeing the architecture and the landscaping. The magnolia trees were in full bloom. Wish I would have had more time.

My wife and I spent about an hour and a half on the self-guided walking tour. It was a beautiful morning and although the temp was in the 80's a nice breeze kept us comfortable. If you like history and/or beautiful, historic homes, this is a must do. The Huntsville welcome center will give you a CD for a narrated driving tour but park your car and walk. Do the driving tour too, or if you're unable to walk, but walk if at all possible. You won't regret it.
