Nice views of the bridge, takes you right down to the bottom where you can swim or camp. Great access to the river. Several pull off spots where you can take photos of the bridge and surroundings.

Great veiws of the New River Bridge from the old bridge. There are mountain streams and a waterfall along the route. There are a few hiking trails as well. Start at the visitor center, and you'll come out the other side near Fayetteville.

Travel along this over 100 year old road and learn the history of the coal mining that once went on in the area and view a one of a kind bridge that has been built so the long and narrow winding road doesn't have to be traveled any longer. You will see beautiful scenery as well as the river that flows through gorge. Start at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center they will give you a book and CD that will give you lots of history as you travel.

A beautiful drive down a winding road to the bottom of the gorge.Great views of the bridge.Make sure you get a free CD from the visitors center.The CD gives you the history of the bridge & area.You end up at the bottom crossing a little bridge & there is a little beach by the river.When you drive back up you end up in Fayetteville. cute town also worth checking out.I would recommend doing this drive if you are visiting the bridge.

Small, winding, tight road down to the New River. The route everyone used to use as a 2-way route across the river until the New River Gorge Bridge was built in the 70s. Now, it is a one-way road that gives you an amazing view of the bridge that you just can't get from the overlooks at the visitor's center. Stop by the Canyon Rim Visitor's Center and ask for the CD audio tour. As you drive, it plays and gives a bit more information about what you are seeing along the way. Definitely a worthwhile adventure.

Best kept secret. Hair pin turns. One way road close to visitors center. Neat to stop on lower bridge to look out at the river and up at the new bridge.

A great road to experience on bike. Everybody who enjoys up and downs of the road should try this rim to rim ride through the New River Gorge.

Fayette Station Road is a wonderful scenic drive that begins right near the Canyon Rim Visitor Center of the New River Gorge National River just off of Hwy 19 shortly after crossing the famous New River Gorge Bridge. Until the completion of the New River Gorge Bridge in the fall of 1977, this was the only way vehicular crossing of the gorge for many miles. The drive winds down the side of the gorge with lots of places to stop, many with NPS interpretive signs; to take in views of the river, whitewater rafters, the gorge and the bridge high above. At the bottom, one crosses the New River on an older bridge, which is shared with the still active railroad, then winds back up out of the gorge through the forest. Before beginning your journey, stop by the Visitor Center and get a copy of the free CD that narrates the scenic trip, providing historical and cultural insights (or download it ahead of time from the NPS website) along with other information regarding the road and New River area. This is a very worthwhile drive if one has the time; about 45 minutes without stops but I would allow at least 90 minutes for stops including one to walk across the old bridge at the bottom of the gorge just above the river.
