There is nothing like the celebration....just a wonderful tradition and a great experience for all. You have to pick up the donuts outside of the arena....eat em all!

I have been to several Celebrations, it is a ten day long horse extravaganza. They have classes for dogs, children on "stick horses", weaklings shown in halter, yearlinga down on halter, youth riders, mares, stallions, flat shod, plantation shod, and"big lick" (2-3 plastic wedges between the hoof and the shoe on the front legs). They have versatility classes with barrel racing, pulling carts or wagons, obstacle courses, etc. They have classes for all age riders, from 5-10 years old, up to an over 70 class, this class has been won the last several years by a man in his 90's. In addition, they have all age horses compete against each other, one class is for horses over 15 years. In most breeds horses are to lame or are used up by age 5 to continue showing or competing, it is a tribute to these animals that they can continue to compete even at an advanced age.It is a carnival atmosphere, fresh donuts, country ham sandwiches, beans and cornbread, hamburgers, fresh lemonade, etc. They even sell cedar wood sticks for those who like to whittle! It always starts the last week in August and lasts about 10 days. There are some great restaurants in the area with mostly home style country cooking. The landscape is beautiful and the people are very friendly and accommodating. It is a great family vacation spot, especially if you love horses.

Our family loves The TN Walking Horse Celebration. Every year we go and enjoy the beautiful horses and decorated horse barns. We love it.

this is the venue to come to. You really get the "old time" feel at this great annual event. And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I don't know a lot about horses but I love the showmanship of the walking horse. Also the farms in the area are something to see.

If you want to see many, many beautiful horses in peak condition, performing at their peak, make a point to see the Celebration! It is held in Shelbyville, Tennessee, 14 days before labor day. The culmination is the last class on Saturday when the name the World Grand Champion! All the lights in the stadium in turned off. A spot light follows the entrant half way around the ring until all the horses have entered the ring. Then they put them through what they are noted for: the flat foot walk, the running walk and the canter. Very exciting show --- the fans will let you know which one they think is best, so you don't have to know much about them to be caught up in the roar of the crowd! You'll want to go back.If you'd like to see some of the past winners, get on the internet. Western Walkers has them all listed from the very first winner --- Strolling Jim.You'll enjoy it.

40,000 fans on a Saturday night in late August - the stadium lights off and one spotlight zeroes in on one stallion as he is crowned World Grand Champion. The spotlight follows him as he takes his victory pass. A THRILL. This horse show will even impress the non-horse lover.
