I have seen countless shows across the United States, probably totaling 600+ concerts. My favorite place or stage to witness any show has and always will be Hoyt Sherman. Not only do you get to experience this intricate beauty nestled in the earliest developments of Des Moines but the sound quality is pristine. I have not yet had the experience of touring Hoyt but for concerts this is thee place you want to experience any band you are passionate about. Perfect seating, advanced lighting, wonderful and seasoned staff, and an ambience you will not soon forget. Many times its hard to believe you are in Iowa here... but rather Nashville back in the early 1900's.

Prefer to attend any events, such as, The Nutcracker ballet, Jim Brickman concert, etc., at this location. It is literally the former family home built in 1887 by Hoyt Sherman (younger brother of General William Sherman of the Civil War). The home literally has a theater with balcony area characteristic of the time period. If you want to attend an event where you can literally be taken back in time, I highly recommend this beautiful establishment. At intermission, you walk the floors an observe this home's architectural beauty and the staff are most hospitable and helpful. If you are traveling in the Des Moines area and are only passing through, this home is open for public viewing daily. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Saw several overpriced shows there this summer. You need a $10 student rate instead of gouging young people. You really need more parking for events.

Well kept, very fun, very cramped. Worth going to once in a while and seeing how entertainment was 130 years ago.

I visited Hoyt Sherman Place for the guided tour and just happened to arrive during a Women’s club luncheon. The nice lady at the desk gave me a brochure and said I could wander around so I explored the house on my own. It’s difficult to describe, there is a small house that was added onto multiple times for the women’s club, including a large theater. There is art everywhere and everyone was very welcoming. When I had finished walking around the luncheon had ended so she personally took me around and explained how they were restoring the art work, told me stories about the house and the history and pointed out many things I had missed. I was so glad I had stopped by since I love history and I learned more about Des Moines than I expected. Well worth a visit and the friendlies people in town. There is ample free parking in a lot to the East of the theater and they allow photography.

I've seen several musicians perform at Hoyt Sherman and am always impressed with the sound at the theatre. The theatre is connected to an old historical home which you are allowed to tour before the event. Probably my favorite place to see shows in Des Moines.

Offerings at the theater vary by season, but the theater has been updated and yet retains it's vintage historical bones. Not a bad seat in the house.

we went a saw a country singer play we had close to the front seats but at time the sound wasnt very good but the view was and the building is amazing. parking is a little limited though for larger events.

The theater is beautiful. The sound is great. But the seats are small and very close together. The front few rows make it hard to see past the person in front of you. Looking around the place it has very interesting architecture

The home was built at the turn of the century in 1877, and has been maintained very well. It does have a section of rooms with an art gallery, and civic events are held there. Some of the old rooms exist as they were then. You may tour the house if you come early for a show, or just make the tour as a trip. But the centerpiece to me is the fine theater. It does not hold a large crowd, but attracts fine shows. Next show for us is the Oak Ridge Boys Christmas show. The seating is comfortable, and not too crowded like some other venues in Des Monies. (Civic Center!) There is even a half balcony which gives a truly excellent view of the stage. I highly recommend anyone seeing a show here.
