I have been to Wiggins Waterfront Park before this summer for the same reason I was there this July with my friend, Lukas. He is a contributor with an annual membership to WXPN and gets two free, three-day admission tickets each year to attend the XPoNential Music Festival. This Camden County park is an excellent venue. It has the Riverstage with the sloping, grassy lawn and a smaller Marina stage that is more shaded. We attend all three days and have a wonderful time listening to the artists. We people watch, drink beer and eat several different delights from the food vendors. As the sun is setting in the West gaze at the silhouette of the Philadelphia skyline. Here is a friendly crowd kicking back enjoying the music. WXPN does a tremendous job putting this on. Attendees are grateful for all the pleasant, helpful volunteers that make it happen. As a historical note, the park on Camden’s Waterfront, where the Pennsylvania Railroad ferry once stood, at the foot of Mickle and Federal Streets, is named in the memory of Dr. Ulysses Simpson Wiggins. Dr. Wiggins is known for his activity in the civil rights movement. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. His focus with the NAACP was to integrate public schools and public accommodations. He was actively involved politically in Camden. In 1928, Dr. Wiggins came to Camden. Dr. Wiggins practiced general medicine and was affiliated with Cooper Hospital. He and his wife resided in Camden. There are numerous attractions adjacent to Wiggins Park. All are within walking distance of the event. I have not visited any of the other attractions, but I sure wonder about them. I am fascinated that so many are available in the immediate area. There are not any free parking lots; however, there are plenty of spaces available. Someone coming from Philadelphia can come directly across the Delaware River from Penn’s Landing on the Freedom Ferry(http://www.riverlinkferry.org/). The ferry usually runs late when there are concerts on the Camden waterfront. Tour the Battleship New Jersey (http://www.battleshipnewjersey.org/). Explore the exhibits at Adventure Aquarium (http://www.adventureaquarium.com/). Attend a concert at Susquehanna Bank Center(http://www.susquehannabankcenter.org/). Treat your children to fun interactive exhibits with a visit to Camden Children's Garden (http://www.camdenchildrensgarden.org/). Take in a minor league baseball game at Campbell’s Field to watch the Riversharks (http://www.riversharks.com/). Get a ticket for a train ride on the light rail River Line, which is the easiest way to all the attractions along the Camden Waterfront (http://www.riverline.com/). Having a picnic at Wiggins Park and using it like a basecamp prior to exploring any of these waterfront attractions. Watching the barges, ships, yachts, sailboats, etc. on the river is entertaining. There are plenty shade trees and benches. There is a Sunset Jazz Series at Wiggins Park. The Camden Waterfront, also known as the Central Waterfront, is a tourist and entertainment district in Camden, New Jersey on the Delaware River south of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and north of Port of Camden. Wiggins Park and Marina is the perfect spot year round for picnics, strolls along the waterfront, and events.
