This park is very large and actually leads from one little lake to another almost from one end of town to the other. MacKenzie however has lots of open space, trails, rest rooms etc available for picnics, hiking, biking and whatever. Joyland Amusement Park, Meadowbrook Golf Course, Prarie Dog Town, Bayer Museum of Agriculture, American Wind Power Center and Wells Fargo Amphitheatre are all here or nearby providing lots of options.

I love the parks especially this one but I noticed there is TONS of trash litterally "everywhere" stuck in all the brush and in the lakes around all the edges and stuck to the bottom of the lakes and the streams that run through them as well. I am a californian and only have been here 3 yrs but I have never seen as much trash in parks as I have here. Its jaw dropping, and Im shocked.I see signs on texas hwys that say "Don't mess with texas" and it pertains to littering.Really?? The people who take care of the park are always sitting in their trucks or riding around and doing minimal clean up,trees cut and grass mowed but no trash pick up.The trash can over flow all day from previous days and nights of partying and beer drinking from ppl even tho its NOT ALLOWED.Its NOT policed very well, there have been more than a couple of dead bodies found, people murderd.Women run after 10 pm at night out there and its easy to get mugged, attacked ect ect. These are issues i would think are very important to people here.I for one would love to see the city parks and security better taken care of,Its a shame to litter so much beauty and to make the wild life live with it is so very sad looking.

There are some other things in this park, but the big attraction is the "Prairie Dog Park" embedded within. It's fun to watch the prairie dogs, but after about 15 minutes, you've seen what you're going to see...

This a very nice oasis of green in Lubbock. It is a large park and should be enjoyed as such. There are a couple of things to watch out for though. It is not in the newest and best part of town and after dark it can become a dangerous and lonely place. Also, don't let your youngsters go off trail and into the brush, a veterinarian friend of mine spotted a rattlesnake once while riding his bikes on the trails, so make sure you use caution as you would anywhere critters can be.

Mackenzie Park is a nice park. You can see Prairie Dog Town. Go to baseball or softball games. You can do Joyland Park. Go golfing.

When we moved to Lubbock, we were warned to avoid this very large park because it is "dangerous." While there might be baddies in the park after dark, during the day it is simply beautiful. The old growth trees, creeks and ponds, and many picnic areas make it one of the city's most beautiful places to spend recreation time. The many joggers and walkers along Cesar Chavez, along with a conspicuous police presence also makes it a great place to exercise without fear of hassle.

The prairie dogs are a hoot and if you bring lettuce or carrots, you can throw the food over the concrete wall. But, stories on the nightly news have convinced me this isn't a place to be at night, especially alone. Seems those who are looking for a bit of action tend to hang out in the park and trouble seems to ensue. Just use caution. But, the prairie dogs are still great.

Bring something to feed them and then enjoy the actions. There were babies and adults. Liked that they had a wall to keep out people and that you could feed them and enjoy watching.

During our weekend stay in Lubbock we stopped by Prairie Dog park located in Mackenzie Park. If you plan to see the little critters use the signs in the park. The signs were actually more helpful than my GPS on Google Maps since the GPS recommended a closed road. It was nice to see many tourist and families with children. A nice touch at the Prairie Dog Park was the historical marker explaining how the animal sanctuary was created and the diagram of the tunnels that make the homes of the animals. It’s a great way to spend about thirty minutes.
