I knew nothing about life on a submarine. The tour was quick but interesting (it took about 45 minutes with the audio tour). The spaces are tight amd there was virtually no one there as I passed through.....I would go very early or very late as it would not be a great experience with crowds. What a challenging life the sailors had....I have such admiration for their courage. It was a worthwhile experience to see it.

The self guided submarine tour itself is nice and very informative. I enjoyed being able to go in the sub and hear all about it over the headsets. Cool history lesson. Watch your head if you are tall! However, the employees are the most rude and grumpy people I have encountered in my month on Oahu. Zero stars for all of them! My goodness, everyone working there had the most foul attitude. Upon walking up to the entrance, we were rudely yelled at that we needed tickets (we had tickets.) When one of our headsets wasn't working and tried to exchange it for a working one, one attendent acted personally offended and exasperated. Other employees rudely yelled at us that the entrance was the other way. We politely explained that the headset wasn't working http://www.heatherbrownart.com/ she snatched it abuptly, indicating we just didn't know how to use it. Turns out, it was indeed broken. We finally got a working headset, but were treated pretty poorly to do so!You are also required to take a cheesy souvenir picture before boarding the submarine. They don't let you get out of if, then hassle you to purchase it at the end. Ugh. Whoever runs this attraction needs to seriously work on their employees' treatment of people. The people working there are just the worst. How they are all so awful truly baffles me and makes me wonder what in the world causes all of them to be so miserable. We were polite and respectful and we got mean and grouchy treatment in return. I have not experienced this at any of the other many places I have been to on this island. Something needs to change here.

We have been to Pearl Harbor twice before but this was the first time that we toured the Bowfin. The submarine is very nicely restored and the staff is very helpful. The museum is well done with many interesting exhibits. The conning tower and periscope exhibit is great. Well worthwhile, sorry that it took us several trips before we toured the Bowfin.

Went with my Son-in-law. he had a Go Pro and I used my Iphone 6 for stills. it was crowded but moved quickly through from bow to stern with good lighting lots of ventilation and little head phone guide to give you an idea what to look for. Almost any one can navigate thru the narrow hatch-ways as long as they can duck and have limber limbs to step over the openings that are about 18" off the deck plates--then turn sideways and step thru the hatches sideways like a crab.I am a Surface Warfare retiree and it was my first look at a WW II Boat except for watching "Up Periscope". Several things surprised me: the thru-hull Water Tight Hatch openings were much smaller than I anticipated. The onboard docent was of little help in knowledge nor operational capability and details of onboard equipment. that is why you wear head phones....but so much critical engineering features were missed by the citizen/civilian visitor. I began explaining things I saw that were either similar or different between a sub and a surface ship and soon found myself with a curious entourage waiting for my next explanation. I really wished some retired sub crew guys were with us. They could have explained so much more to the visitors. Here is list of my surprises: 1. The sub was larger than I expected from that era of submarine warfare.2. I was impressed with the size and capability of the galley. Had always heard that sub-sailors eat well...they did then and they do today.3. Every inch of space was utilized by something important...a valve, a meter, cable runs, a switch.... i just could not stop taking pictures. I will upload some with this note. You simply must tour this boat if you have never been aboard a sub.

A bit of a "side show" to the USS Arizona memorial but a recommended visit within the Memorial site to see the whole of a submarine which saw action in the Pacific and what life must have been like for those brave sailors.

Great self-guided tour. Just awesome. If you have any interest in naval history, subs or wwii then a must see.
