There are many different options to experience the Road to Hana - but hiring your own car is one of the best ways to experience this unique experience.Being Australian - the only challenge for us was getting use to driving on the opposite side of the road. But if you are careful - driving is not a issue at all.Take the journey in your own time - stop where and when takes your fancy. Spend as little or as much time as you want exploring the many different natural delights.Stops on the way: - twin falls - Halfway to Hana stop: try the banana bread... It's AMAZING!!! - random side of the road waterfallsNote: be careful when driving over the one way bridges. Not all drivers adhere to the Yielding signs so you may need to look out before you try cross the bridges.

When people tell you to go slow and enjoy, there is a reason! The average speed for the road is less than 15 mph! The roads are VERY narrow and have switchbacks that make you want o lean out the car window to see if someone is around the corner!But if you designate a driver to watch the road, the others can see some of the most scenic parts of Hawaii! There are numerous lookouts and a few wayside spots for stretch breaks or rest room visits. Fill the tank up before you go, get a picnic lunch, get a good map for the sites because they are not well marked, and ENJOY. Plan for a full day so get started early, you do not want to be on the road after dark!

If you have been to Maui once, then you can do this trip. It's a long and scenic trip. That is about it. Both my husband and I felt we've seen it all on the 2nd hour. I dont think this is a good trip to take with kids. We would get "Are we there yet" 1000x times it would ruin everything.7 sacred Falls was beautiful. So much fun to swim and try to go to different pools. On our trip back, we stopped at a couple of fruit stalls. We had young coconut juice, passion fruits, guavas. A young man manned the coconut stall. For $5, he cracked 2 coconut open, gave us spoon to scoop the flesh and straws to finish the juice. I think this was the highlight of the trip.Again, if you have been everywhere in Maui you should go here.

My friend and I booked a guided tour of the Road to Hana instead of doing a self-guided tour. Our tour guide, Junior, was AMAZING ... not only as a skilled driver but as a fun, interesting and very accommodating guide. We discovered SO MANY things about Maui on this day that we never knew before and loved the scenic stops along the way. Truly one of the best excursions that focused more on the journey than the destination ... and one we will never forget. Like Junior said so many times ~ "It's a beautiful thing!"

We drove from Ka'anapali to Hana. We left about 9am we got to Hana around 4:30 pm and left at 5:30 to return to Ka'anapali as we didn't want to drive in rain and in darkness. We had to take the same route back as we had a rental car which precluded going past Kipahulu. It is a long slow drive over numerous one way bridges and 621 curves. It is much like a slow roller coaster but fun to drive. The ads make it sound like a perilous trip but it is nothing like that. If I had it to do over, I'd leave Ka'anapali around 7 am and drive straight to Haleakala National Park at Kipahulu and work my way back toward Ka'anapali. It is just difficult to figure out how long it takes to make a trip from Ka'anapali. For example when we arrived, it took us 2 1/2 hours to travel the short distance from the airport to Ka'anapali as traffic was stop and go. We think there were many drivers slowing down to a stand still to gauk at the whales. The trip from Paia to Hano is only 42 miles long. The time one uses to make the trip depends on the number of stops one makes. You also must understand that the sights don't come with road signs giving their location. It's more a hunt and find trip. You will clearly see the bamboo forrests, the rainbow eucalyptus as you drive along. We lost time looking for "JAWS" ( left turn onto Hahana Road which turns into a dirt road) which we found but were unable to reach as it had been raining and one would need a higher wheel base vehicle (jeep or 4 wheel drive) than our Mazda sport van. At twin falls, you'll need to cross a stream by foot to get to the falls. Wear sandals or shoes you don't mind getting soaked and have a swim suit on as you'll have to get in the water to get close to the 1st falls and to get to the 2nd falls. One driving guide told us to stop at Waikamoi just past mile marker 10 to see a 70 foot waterfall. We hiked the trails but found no waterfall. The sign at the entry of the park/trail indicates there is no waterfall acess so I'm not sure why the travel guide said otherwise. This was another time waster. Allong the road will be pullouts where you can see waterfalls (around mile markers 11 & 12 & 13). We stopped at the Half Way to Hana for a bite to eat ( hotdogs $2.00 each) and banana bread ($6.50). It was a timely break. We stopped at Waianapanapa state park and saw the black sand beach, lava tube, freashwater caves and many whales. We proceeded to Hana which isn't much of a town and located the red sand beach to the right of the harbor/bay as you face the bay. There was plenty of free parking. We gassed up at Ka'anapali (Ed's Union 76 in Lahaina $3.099) and had over 1/2 tank left when we got back to Ka'anapali. I'd eat a hearty breakfast and pack some food to go with you.

If you are going to be on Maui anytime soon, be sure to reserve a day for the Road to Hana drive. Everyone should do the drive once. We have done it three times over the past 22 years, and have never been disappointed. It consistently ranks as one of the top 10 beautiful drives in the world, but it is not for the feint of heart. I should caution that the scenery along the drive is lovely and can be very distracting, but it is important to keep your eyes on the road. We passed two vehicles on our way down that had rolled over in the foliage. It is a beautiful drive with majestic views abounding around every curve, and speaking of curves, there are 620 of them with 59 bridges, many being only one lane. The 52 mile drive from Kahului to Hana can easily take 3 hours or more depending on how many times you stop for that beautiful Kodak moment. Be sure to stop at Waianapanapa State Park and take the short walk to Maui's only black sand beach. It will be on your left near mile marker 32 just before entering Hana. I would recommend starting early to beat most of the traffic on the drive. We left our resort at about 7:15 on a Sunday morning, and found the traffic to be the lightest of the three times we have driven it. Another word of caution is to make sure you have a full tank of gas. Our last time on the drive I did not have a full tank thinking I would fill up at the Hana gas station, only to discover their pumps were broken. I coasted most of the way down. A last recommendation would be to purchase a guide book that points out the sites to see and lists their respective mile markers. If you are truly adventuresome, you can travel another 11 miles past Hana to the grave site of Charles Lindbergh. The scenery here is awe inspiring as well, but I caution against continuing around Haleakala crater since the road is not paved all the way and it can void your rental car contract. Enjoy the drive.

Our tour began at the cruise port...traveled over a variety of roads...through different weather conditions...all the way to Hana & back. All day. The best way to get a fairly thorough understanding of the island. In places, the road is challenging...narrow bridges, bumpy, ...even saw a couple of vehicles that had run off the road. Interesting how one side of the island gets lots of rain, while the other side is very dry. Our guide was a good driver, entertaining, & very knowledgeable. Loved the beach stops. Even visited a winery. I would rather be on a tour with a driver...you will miss a lot of scenery if you have to focus on the road.

The Road to Hana was the highlight of our trip. It is an all day adventure. The scenery is spectacular, waterfalls and views that are unbelievable. Do you research before you go and you need a jeep to really enjoy.

The road TO Hana, though twisty and narrow -- with one-lane bridges where you often have to give way (back up!), is not as scary as they make it out to be. The road FROM Hana back to "civilization" is another story. If you have a rental car, do NOT go past Hana. In fact, Rental car agencies often prevent it. (Check!) It's full of deep pot-holes and no guard rails -- steep drop-offs. For your best experience of the difference between this wilder side of Maui (flora, beaches and waterfalls, it's best to take a tour bus. Otherwise, you as driver will miss everything. We took a Valley Isle bus. Ask for Scott as driver if you can. He's the most informative and funniest, and he seems to know everyone along the way.
